Tags – choosing relevant words
-
I’m quite new to all this and have read with interest the various posts on the subject of tags, but there’s something not quite clear in my mind.
I understand that one of the purposes of tags is so visitors to your blog can see at a glance the sort of subjects you write about. I’m a journalist and copywriter so I blog about words and communication in the broadest sense – things like missing apostrophes, bad spelling, bad grammar. I I use those phrases as tags along with things like Writing, Publishing and so on. So far so good.
But another purpose of tags is to draw people to your blog from search engines. Now, as a journalist I want to show that I have a broad general knowledge and could write about pretty much anything. My blogs have mentioned, in passing, diverse subjects like Cats, Steam Rooms, Tableware and Travel… should I include those subjects as tags, or would this be what I’ve seen described as “playing games with SEO”, given that the blog posts aren’t actually ‘about’ those subjects? A good example of what I’m asking is when I mentioned ‘Sex and the City’, in the context of a discussion about words being used incorrectly by film reviewers. Would it be ‘cheating’ to use Sex and the City as a tag, or would this be quite acceptable in that it draws in people who might not otherwise look at my blog?
thanks for thoughts on this…The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

Not really… Search engines nowadays look at your content rather that your tags.
