  Does it make sense to go back to previously published posts and add tags to them? If I do this, do I have to amend these posts and then republish them?

  You can surely add tags to the previously published posts. It makes perfect sense. Tagging is very important for the discover-ability of your site.

  Go to All Posts screen at https://angies2734.wordpress.com/wp-admin/edit.php

  Move the mouse to the post title and click on Quick Edit screen.

  Add tags in the Tags text box to the right. Separate multiple tags using commas.

  Click the blue Update button.
