Is there any easy way of creating a timeline using tags?
I’ve got a tag for each year (because I’m tracking history) and optimally there’d be an easy way to make a timeline or table showing each year tag, with the number of items in each tag. It would make it easy to display to visitors the surfeit of items I have from 2019 or so, and the lack around 2000. Is there anything that could be worked into serving that purpose?WP.com: Yes
Correct account: YesThe blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

Hi there,
We do offer an “archive block” that you can use to set up a quick archive list on your site. It does not rely on your tags however, but is automatically set up to display a list of how many posts you have on your blog over the years. However it displays by month, not year, so the list would be something like this

What you describe though is something you may have to create manually. We do not have a way to display a list of just your “year tags” with a post count next to it.
If you want to set up something that is more visually arresting you may want to consider our timeline block, along with manually creating your archives and linking to posts that way.

Is there a way of using the tag cloud with only certain tags? Would achieve a similar effect of demonstrating which tags have more entries, but limit to a certain set of tags for clarity.

You can read more about how to set up the Tag Cloud Widget – including how to exclude tags – here:

I hope that helps!
