Thanks tsp, I had actually been through the first one, but my understanding did not improve much. That second link you posted I had not seen.

Maybe if I go back over those posts / videos a few times, things will become clearer. Right now, I have to admit, I just don’t understand it.

lifemagician – let me try to help without muddying the waters. It’s organization. Categories and tags help people to find your blog and to find things on your blog. In their simplest function, think of them as ways to make your blog more usable for others. So:

Think of your blog as a book called My Vacation. Turn to the index in the back. See “Boston” there in the index? That’s a category. Under Boston where it says “North End” and “Shopping” and “Back Bay”? Those three are tags.

My readers range from web developers to people who don’t know how to bookmark a page. The latter aren’t well-served by geek speak so I don’t even use the words categories and tags in their respective clouds in the sidebar. Categories is called Browsing? Start Here. Tags are called Narrow Your Focus. The geeks know they’re categories and tags and neophytes don’t need to know. They need to find something.

Categories and tags also impact search engine results, but that’s not the issue for you at this time.
