Confused about tags. As a test, I typed in several tags for one post, clicked add.
The question is, who sees them, and where? Thanks.

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

    Hi,

People can browse tags if you use the tag widget on your blog.
    http://en.support.wordpress.com/widgets/tag-cloud-widget/

This is also how people can find you in the Reader.
    http://en.support.wordpress.com/topics/

Read here to learn more about tags:

    Hope that helps!

Hi honeysilvas–Been away. A belated thanks. Will check it out now and get back to you.

Hi honeysilvas– I checked your suggestions as follows:
Went to Posts—Tags—add a new tag.
Saw: Name. But name of what? A post?
Description. Describing what? A general description of the post’s subject(s)? It doesn’t say.

On Posts >>Tags — I saw Adding tags via the tags module.
It says I can add tags before publishing a post. What about after? Which is what I’d like to do now. Also, how can I find the tags module? That page doesn’t tell me how to reach it.

On my Front Page website I inserted into the HTML a description of its contents, and a substantial amount of keywords, which covered every aspect of the included subjects. I thought of these insertions as tags. This is what I hope to do here, but I’m not succeeding. Sorry for my denseness. I’d greatly appreciate a little more guidance. Thanks.

Yes, you can add tags before and after publishing a post.
When you add a new post (Dashboard, Post > Add New) or edit a post (Dashboard, Post > All Posts, then click Edit), you’ll open the post editor. In you right sidebar, you will see 4 boxes, named Publish, Format, Categories and Tags. Go to Tags and you can add your tags there.

This is the part that explains it with pictures:

Let me know if that clears it up!

Via the tags module in your editor (what I explained above) is probably the easier way to add tags.

Went to Posts—Tags—add a new tag.
Saw: Name. But name of what? A post?

Name means the name of the tag (the tag itself). So if you want to tag a post as “flag”, then the name of the tag would be “flag” (without the quotation marks).

Description. Describing what? A general description of the post’s subject(s)? It doesn’t say.

Description means a description of the tag. This is optional so you can leave it blank if you like.

Thanks, @timethief! That explains it much better. :)

    @timethief
Oh, wow! That explains how you’re so organized and thorough. :)

Thanks to both timethief and honeysilvas–
What has been confusing me is this: I have these Categories:
    Excerpts
    Stories
    Viewpoints
But now there is another form of category similar to a tag, but not a tag.
Would this example for my “The Amendment Scam” be correct?

CATEGORIES: Guns, Founders against Monarchy, Right to bear arms, 18th to 20th century
TAGS: 2nd Amendment rationale, Muskets, 30 round Assault weapons,
32,000 yearly American dead, NRA, Jim Brady and Murdered Children

    Thanks for feedback.

There’s not really a right way or wrong way of doing things, per se. It’s correct if it works for you and your subject matter.

But, I think, in general, you group your related posts by category in the way you want your readers to view your site (for example, if you have your categories as navigation in your menu, sidebar or footer). Usually you have only one or a couple of categories per post. Categories are a broader grouping.

Tags are more freestyle and not as rigid as categories. There’s a lot more overlapping of subject matter with tags. Tags are more specific and should ideally be around 5-15 tags per post.

Read this, too, to understand more about tags.

    Thank you.
I added tags to my Amendment Scam post. I then noticed the tags listed at the bottom of the post. The 32 became separated from 32,000 and wound up elsewhere and makes no sense. I figured I had to write it as 32000, without the comma. So the question: how to revise the tag?
    Thank you again for help.

You can edit the Tags by going to Posts > Tags in your Dashboard. You can see the step-by-step instructions here:

    Organize Posts with Tags

    Back again–
Yikes! A major problem. I’ve misread all of it. In the Viewpoint Category I opened my The Amendment Scam post and added the tags, thinking this was only for this post. I then opened my Business has No Flag post to add tags to that, and found that the tags I thought were specifically for The Amendment Scam were listed here.
So now I find that this list of tags (suggested limit of 15) is to cover the subjects of the entire Viewpoint category. How is this possible? If you check my blog you will see I’m covering a wide range of Viewpoint topics, which will widen and differ considerably as I continue to write.
I’m guessing now that this group of tags will cover all Viewpoint entries, while another group of tags will cover Book Excerpts, and another will cover Stories. Am I right? If so, I’m still wondering how I will be able to include so many tags for each category. And I still have to know how to undo my tag list mistake. Dumber than dumb. Thanks so much for your patience.

    Hi,

The tags that you add should just be per post, not per category.

Try editing your tags by going to Posts > All Posts in your Dashboard, then hover over the post you want to edit, then click “Quick Edit”. There is a tags box on the right, you can edit your tags and just click the “Update” button when you are done. This way, you can easily see what tags you have for the different posts.

Let me know if this way is easier for you.

  • Unknown's avatar

By the way, when you add tags in Quick Edit, you should separate each tag with a comma.

  • Unknown's avatar

Are you using the new editor (Beep Beep Boop) or the old editor?

If you are using the new editor, I think the list of tags you saw in the second post (Business has No Flag post) are just the tags you can choose from. The Business has No Flag post is not actually tagged with the tags, you would still need to select them. I think that might be where the confusion is.

In the new editor, the selected tags will have a blue background around them, and it makes the tag look similar to a button and they are listed horizontally.

The unused tags are listed vertically with a white background. These would be the tags you can choose from.

Okay, I wrote the following and entered them in The Amendment Scam as tags (in the sequence that made sense to me), as suggested: Quick edit and update. It seemed to work:
Founders against monarchy, the right to bear arms, 18th to 21st century, muskets, 30 round assault weapons, the 2nd Amendment rationale, 32000 yearly average dead, 300 million guns, NRA, Jim Brady and murdered American children
But when I checked my Amendment post, it was there at bottom, but all out of sequence, which made little sense:
    Categories: Viewpoints
Tagged as: 18th to 21st century, 30 round assault weapons, 300 million guns, 32000 yearly average dead, Founders against monarchy. The right to bear arms, Jim Brady and murdered American children, muskets, NRA, the 2nd Amendment rationale
Then, curious, I went to my other published posts and found these tags there, as well. For instance, this was at the bottom of my post Business Has No Flag:
    Top categories: My Book Excerpts/Viewpoints/Stories
Top tags: Founders against monarchy. The right to bear arms/ 30 round assault weapons/ Jim Brady and murdered American children/ the 2nd Amendment rationale/ 32000 yearly average dead/ 18th to 21st century/ 300 million guns/ muskets/ NRA

This was what I was trying to explain earlier: The tags for one viewpoint shows up at the bottom of all the others, which naturally doesn’t relate to those posts and is therefore confusing. Tomorrow I will go to another viewpoint post and add tags that are related to that post’s content, to see what happens. Will they all pile up in a jumble? As usual, thanks for your patience.

    Hi,

Tags are listed in alphabetical order so you don’t need to put them in sequence.

    When I visited this page:
    http://martinjryansamerica.com/2014/07/30/the-amendment-scam/

    I see

    Categories: Viewpoints
Tagged as: 18th to 21st century, 30 round assault weapons, 300 million guns, 32000 yearly average dead, Founders against monarchy. The right to bear arms, Jim Brady and murdered American children, muskets, NRA, the 2nd Amendment rationale

    When I go to:
    http://martinjryansamerica.com/2014/08/26/empathy-3/

    This is all I see:

    Categories: Viewpoints

I don’t see any tags in that post at all so I think you are on the right track.

If there are tags on Business Has No Flag, can you post the link here so we can see?
