The bad penny returns. The following subject has nothing to do with the four small images I will want under the banners. (they will be either complete but small, or cropped). I haven’t dealt with them yet.
I added a new category: My Political Cartoons–although it didn’t display on my home page list of categories.
I went to the support instructions (you listed above) and found them devoted to categories which said nothing about images. I then noticed a tiny media icon on the left, clicked on it and selected a cartoon from my media library. I did not click featured.
When I went to my home page to see if the category was finally listed there, I found the large full scale cartoon image was displayed taking up half the page. It’s supposed to be hidden. I trashed it. So, lost again. I want a category of full scale cartoons that are entirely hidden from view, that can only be seen when one opens the cartoon category. Square one–sorry. -
Should have added above–I think this why I was originally talking about a page, like a bio page that you have to click on to see. But with images instead of text.

Hi!
I see what you mean now. Yes, you can definitely create a page instead of a post and put images in it.
To add images to a page, it would be a little bit similar to adding images to a post.
In your Dashboard, go to Pages > Add New, then you can click Add Media to add your images. You can’t put pages into categories, however, so you would just have to put a link to the page itself rather than to a category. (You would have to create just one page instead of many pages.)
You can then add a link to the page in your widget (either the side or footer widget)
http://en.support.wordpress.com/widgets/custom-menu-widget/or on your top navigation bar (the one that says “About/Bio”).
-
Thank you. I created a page and inserted most of my cartoons (will add more). It worked nicely. But the link is another matter.
It shows up on the top bar with about/bio, but I fear the text is thin and its position is remote, and will not be found. I looked at the custom menu widget thing. I typed in the name: My Political Cartoons, then saved or published–forget which–checked home base and saw nothing. What I need is a noticeable link with enough weight (on the right side if possible). As usual, guidance needed. And hey, I’m a workaholic–don’t you take Saturday off?
Thanks. -
I saw the link at the top navigation. It looks nice!
I work from home so I can work random hours. Saturday is actually a good day to work. :)
After you create a custom menu (in your Dashboard, Appearance > Menus):
http://support.wordpress.com/menus/#creating-a-custom-menuTo create a new menu, click the create a new menu link, then just type in a Menu Name (to help you remember what it is), and click the Create Menu button.
and adding the page you want to that menu:
http://en.support.wordpress.com/menus/#adding-pagesAdding pages to your menu is as simple as checking the proper boxes for the pages you want and then clicking Add to Menu.
You need to add the menu that you created to your sidebar widget (Appearance > Widgets) by dragging the Custom Menu Widget to the Sidebar (or click Custom Menu, then click Sidebar)

Hi honeysilvas–
I want to now create the 4 image slider under the banners. I did this:
Appearance–customize. Saw the new column on right side of screen–clicked featured content, clicked and entered a tag for the 1st of the 4 images. I then saved. (that is, I saw a tiny notice “saved.”) As usual, I’m missing something, because I checked home base and didn’t find a slider image. -
Hi, landmart,
Go to Appearance > Customize > Featured Content, then where it says Tag Name, write the tag you want to use. For example, “featured” (without the quotation marks). You can use any word that you like.
Then go to Posts > All Posts and add the tag you used (for example: “featured”) as the tag for that post.
(This, I believe would only work for posts, not pages.)
Alternatively, you can also just mark as sticky the posts that you want to appear as the 4 images.

Hi–
I’m really messing things up. (First, because of size, looks like I won’t be able to have more than 3 cartoons in the slider, which is okay) But I somehow created a banner out of the first entry, which I don’t want–looks terrible and I don’t know how to eliminate it. The other problem, I notice these cartoons are showing up in my post list on the right side (as numbers?) pushing what I consider to be more important out of view, and I would like to avoid that. Ugh! doing it all wrong. As the wicked witch said–I’m melting! -

If you create posts, they will show up in the Recent Posts Widget since they are recent posts. If you want to have control over the displayed posts, try one of the other widgets like:
http://en.support.wordpress.com/widgets/posts-i-like-widget/
http://en.support.wordpress.com/widgets/custom-menu-widget/
http://en.support.wordpress.com/widgets/top-posts-widget/
(There are many others, just choose one that best fit your needs.)Also, so they don’t show up as numbers, I recommend giving your cartoon posts a proper title.
Let me figure out the slider and I will post back in a bit.

Hi,
But I somehow created a banner out of the first entry, which I don’t want–looks terrible and I don’t know how to eliminate it.
Go to Posts > All Posts then Quick Edit the cartoons you don’t want to
appear in the slider.Remove the tag called “featured” from the tags. This is what makes them automatically appear in the big slider.
Add a tag that you want to use specifically for the cartoons. For example: “cartoons” without the quotation marks.
Go to Appearance > Customize > Featured Content, then where it says Tag Name, write the tag that you chose. For example, “cartoons” (without the quotation marks).
(Basically, the tag “featured” makes it automatically appear in the big slider.)

I think I’d like to differentiate between slider(under banner) and banner(above slider). As you appear to use slider for both. Anyway I went to All Posts–Quick Edit and saw no tag called featured that I could use to remove the banner. Also, since I’m having trouble publishing the other small images on the slider, I’m afraid of removing them along with the banner.
The “Recent posts” numbers: if you click on 275 the cropped image of Bush/Cheney will display nicely on another page, but not where I want it. The 264 is zero, probably an image I deleted. Go figure.
-
“Recent Posts” update. Managed to remove mystery #264 and changed numbers to titles: Name/Cartoon. Still, when you click on Bush/Cheney Cartoon in Recent Posts it continues to display elsewhere.
-
Hi,
How did you add the cartoons to the slider? Did you make them sticky? If you made them sticky, just make them unsticky.
Then go to Posts > All Posts then Quick Edit the cartoons you don’t want to appear in the banner.
Add a tag that you want to use specifically for the cartoons. For example: “cartoons” without the quotation marks.
Go to Appearance > Customize > Featured Content, then where it says Tag Name, write the tag that you chose. For example, “cartoons” (without the quotation marks).

Where do you want it?
Still, when you click on Bush/Cheney Cartoon in Recent Posts it continues to display elsewhere.
Where exactly does it display?

Hi honeysilvas–
Answering your first question: I want it displaying in the slider under the banners, alongside the Bush/Obama cartoon.
I managed to get rid of the numbers (like 275) on “Recent Posts” and insert names. i.e. Bush/Cheney Cartoon.
Answering your second question: This image (formerly 275) displays at the following:
http://martinjryansamerica.com/2014/09/30/275/ and not in the slider under the banners, where it belongs.
I am desperate to eliminate the huge Bush/Obama cartoon banner while retaining the image as it currently exists in the slider under the banner. -
Hi,
How did you put the Bush/Obama cartoon on the banner? Did you make it a sticky? If you made it a sticky, you just have to make it unsticky to get it off the banner.
If you used a different way to put the cartoon on the banner, you just have to reverse what you did.

Or if you didn’t do anything special to put in on the banner, you can change the status of the post to draft for now. Edit the post, then on the right-hand side, where it says Status: Published, click Edit, then change it to Draft. That should remove the post from everywhere for now.
