Let’s start with the banner first.

I think your banner displays your 6 most recent posts. You just need to make sure that your 6 most recent posts are the ones you want to be displayed on the banner.

Whenever you add newer posts, those will displace your older posts in the banner. But, I think if you make the 6 older posts sticky, they will remain in the banner.

Here’s how to make the older posts (the ones that you want displayed on the banner) sticky:
    http://en.support.wordpress.com/posts/post-visibility/#sticky-posts

But if that does not work, you can always change the date of the newer posts (your political cartoons) to older. (In the post editor, right-hand side, where it says “Published On:” click edit to change the date back to a past date)

    Hi–
First, I removed the cartoon from the banners by eliminating the image altogether, which, as I guessed, also removed the image from the slider. So now I have no images in an under-the-banner’s-slider. I want to have at least three images in the under-the banners-slider. Regarding “stickies,” I’ve never used them–don’t know how.
I am so confused at this point, I would like to start from scratch, as if I had never even tried to accomplish a slider until now.
I would greatly appreciate your to telling me step by step how to create a slider (Under the banners) whose images will remain static until I decide to change them.
    Thanks

OK, let’s start over. We can do this!

I think the main issue is that WordPress orders posts by reverse chronology, meaning it will show you the newest posts at the top and places older posts at the bottom. Every time you create a new post, it will push the older posts to the bottom.

And every time you make a new post, it will appear in the 4 areas that we have been talking about: the main banner, the slider (featured content area), the Recent Posts widget (in the sidebar) and the main posts area (the one under the banner and the featured content).

So if you go to Posts > All Posts, the order that it appears there is the order that it will show in all 4 of those areas.

There is no real easy way to reorder posts except for changing the date of the post. It’s not usually recommended because it changes the links but if you only do it for the new posts, then it shouldn’t be a problem.

So this is what you need to do:

Create your political cartoon posts (or if you had set them to draft, you need to set them to publish again.)

You need to change the date of the political cartoon posts to a past date (for example, June 1, 2014, or even later if you want).

You can either do this in the post editor (right-hand side) where it says Published On: (just click edit to change the date) or you can do it in Posts > All Posts, then Quick Edit and change the date.

Once you do this, go back to Posts > All Posts and make sure the first 6 or so posts on top are not the political cartoon posts.

At this point, when you check your website, the only place the political cartoons will appear is in the main posts area. There is not really much you can do about it appearing in the main posts area, but just make sure you set the date of the political cartoons back enough that they are low on the page.

Once you have done the above instructions, proceed with these next steps which will show the slider (featured content):

Go to Posts > All Posts then Quick Edit the cartoons you don’t want to appear in the banner.

Add a tag that you want to use specifically for the cartoons. For example: “cartoons” without the quotation marks.

Go to Appearance > Customize > Featured Content, then where it says Tag Name, write the tag that you chose. For example, “cartoons” (without the quotation marks).

Let me know if that works!

Okay, this is what I did:
    add new post
    media
    select prepared image
    publish
quick edit and tag: Bush Cheney Cartoon
Change date to June 1, 2014
    update
    Appearance-customize-featured content
    save

And when I went to home base I found a short horizontal bar under the banners exactly where the image is supposed to be –but no image. I clicked on the bar and the image (Bush Cheney Cartoon) displayed on another page, as it did before. While the Chronicle theme that’s presented in WordPress Demos shows a slider, It seems it won’t do it for me. Unless, of course, I didn’t do the above in the proper order. But if I did:
I’m wondering about “Stickies.” Can I “Sticky” 3 images under the banners, and therefore achieve the slider this way? If so, how do I do stickies?

In your post, you forgot to set a featured image.

To set the featured image, go edit your post, then
on the right-hand side, the bottom box is Featured
Image, then click Set Featured Image.
    http://en.support.wordpress.com/featured-images/#setting-a-featured-image

You’re so close! I think we almost got it. Don’t worry about the stickies for now.

    Hi–
    I did this:
    Add new post
    Media
    Select image
    Insert into post
    Publish
    Go to all posts
Quick edit and tag the cartoon name
    Change date to June
    Update
Appearance-customize-featured content – enter name of cartoon
    Save
    All posts & Edit
Select image & set featured image
    Update.
But it’s not working as a slider. Each time I add a new image it pushes out the other, so that only one image appears at a time, instead of the way a group appears side by side in the Chronicle demo. And the image that appears is a bit murky. Also, they all appear in a column below to the right, just as murky, under “Uncategorized.” Why not “Cartoons? I really don’t get it.

    Hi,

You need to create several posts if you want them to appear on the banner. You can only set one featured image per post.

(The featured image is what appears in the banner. When you click on the banner, the image you see there is what you added using “Add Media”.)

The default category is Uncategorized. You can add a Cartoons category and group the post under that category through the post editor:
    http://en.support.wordpress.com/posts/categories/#adding-categories-via-the-categories-module
You can also edit the category names here:

OK, so I see you already do have 3 different posts:

    http://martinjryansamerica.com/2014/06/02/294/
    http://martinjryansamerica.com/2014/06/02/290/
    http://martinjryansamerica.com/2014/06/01/287/

You have to set a featured image for each one.

You also have to tag each post. The tag that you use for the Featured Content has to be the same one for each post.

    For example:
Add “cartoons” (without the quotes) as a tag for
    http://martinjryansamerica.com/2014/06/02/294/

Add “cartoons” (without the quotes) as a tag for
    http://martinjryansamerica.com/2014/06/02/290/

Add “cartoons” (without the quotes) as a tag for
    http://martinjryansamerica.com/2014/06/01/287/

Then, go to Appearance > Customize > Featured Content, then where it says Tag Name, write the tag that you chose. For example, “cartoons” (without the quotation marks).
*It has to be the SAME tag that you used for all the 3 posts*

Oh. I used a different tag for each. I’ll see.
