tags appearing automatically in post title

I remember reading somewhere in the millions of forum posts about tags that tags are automatically inserted into your post from words in the title.
My question: are you *penalised* in any way – ie in tag searches, etc – if you forget this and check the category box for words that already appear in the title?
For example, on this post:
http://lettershometoyou.wordpress.com/2008/07/10/canada-beats-germany-in-pre-olympic-basketball-friendly/I forgot and checked the categories for Canada and Germany, though both appear in the title.
Or does it matter at all if you do this?

I recall in one post somewhere that globally tags and catagories are treated the same way in WordPress. And the title wouldn’t have any effect on this. In fact you’d want to tag your posts with significant words from the post to give some indication of the content of the post.
Title and content would be indexed by the internet search engines-though this can take a few days to show up as the search engine robots get to new content but tags and catagories are generally quicker-hours.
These are two different things done in two different ways. (tags+catagories-markers outside the post content itself) (search engine indexing-all post content including title+tags)
Also you can go back and add tags at any time. Just edit the post and fill in a couple of tags. Tags are not automatically added. That would be a search engine indexing thing.

Yes, I see where your at. Please bear with me while I phrase the question another way.
Had I left out the tags/categories Germany, Canada and basketball, which are all in the title, would someone searching under those keywords still find the post? Or would it be better to leave the three tags/categories in despite their appearance in the title.

You will not be penalized by this. Penalties would occur if you had 700 more tags associated with that post (well it wouldn’t take that many, but you get the point). This is fine.

Oh yeah, we’ve all seen the tag-spammers. I hear the upper limit is 12, after which you get red-flagged as one.

There is no published rule on that, but that is essentially how it works.
We hate over-taggers. :)
