tags broken: authors and editors unable to add tags to posts
-
I am a teacher using a private blog for a writing class. (This is a basic WP.com hosted blog, no fancy plugins installed, no independent hosting involved.) My students are all registered as users on the blog. For our assignments to work the students need to be able to add their own tags to their posts. I’ve done this several times in the past, but never had problems.
This semester, I added all my students to the blog and made them all authors. Just the way I have in the past. However, when creating a new post, the majority of my students can not get the tagging options to work. They can write/post a new post, but they can not tag their own posts.
I created a test account to try and troubleshoot the problem. I am encountering the same issue on the test account in Safari and Firefox. I also have the same error whether my permissions are set to author or editor. I also tried turning on and off my browser plugins (adblocker, etc.) and that doesn’t fix it either.
Has anyone else run into this? It’s been a year since I’ve used a class blog, is there a new setting somewhere that I’m missing? Or, an old setting that I’ve forgotten about? Is this something to do with the new WP editor? (Which, I hate BTW. Ug.) I have no idea why these users can’t tag their posts, it makes no sense.
Help an english teacher out y’all! We’ve got young writers to mold! :)
(Okay, and where it gets *really weird. 1-2 of my students were able to tag their posts. There are tags on the blog that my administrator account did. not. add. It’s just that about 20+ users can’t, including my test account.)
The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

Unfortunately, I’ve tried that option and it seems to be a no-go.
I can switch to the old editor on my account and my test accounts and it does seem like tags can be added there. However, my accounts have all been active for several years. My students are all new WordPress users. They tell me they are not being offered the option to switch to the old editor. I’m guessing new accounts are prevented from going backwards.
This means that, unfortunately, switching to the old editor doesn’t seem to be an option.

There is no categories and tagging issue when using the classic post editor. We can all use the classic editor. We are not yet compelled to use the new Beep Beep Boop editor where that issue exists.
Dashboard > Posts > Add Posts
http://eng150spring2015.wordpress.com/wp-admin/post-new.phpFor your students note this format:
https://NAME_OF_BLOG.wordpress.com/wp-admin/post-new.phpNAME_OF_BLOG has to be replaced with the correct .wordpress.com blog URL.
The guide is at http://en.support.wordpress.com/posts/tags/#adding-tags-via-the-tags-module

@timethief – I’m sorry, I’m not fully understanding what you just posted.
Re. the URL:
http://eng150spring2015.wordpress.com/wp-admin/post-new.php
Are you saying that this URL circumvents the new WP editor and takes users to the old editor?Re. the tagging guide:
Thank you for the link, but I’ve read that extensively already. All of my students were following those steps. The problem is that the Post Tags module is not working for any users on the blog besides the administrator account. Essentially, no one with the role of editor or author can get the post tags module to work when they’re using the new WP editor module. -
I tagged this thread for Staff to take notice of your issue and feedback and help you. Please subscribe to it so you are notified when they respond. To subscribe look in the sidebar of this thread, find the subscribe to topics link and click it.

Staff know there is an issue with Tagging in the new Beep Beep Boop editor as the tags do not “stick”, and that will be addressed in upcoming iterations. I choose to use the classic editor only and you and your students can do the same thing too, if you want to.

@timethief – Interesting, so it is a known issue? That’s good to know.
Just double-checking. In your earlier comment, were you saying that the “http://eng150spring2015.wordpress.com/wp-admin/post-new.php” URL will default to the old editor?
If that’s the case, I can just have my students use that URL for now. I just want to confirm that the URL won’t load the new editor for them.
-
Oh yes it’s a known issue. Click this new editor feedback.
I just want to confirm that the URL won’t load the new editor for them.
rhetorical questions:
Are they all using the same computers?
The same OS and the same browsers? Not to worry as Staff will deal with that when they work their way forward to this thread.

If the classic editor is not what you see there then click the link in the right hand sidebar to use the classic editor instead.

timethief is correct, this is a known issue. I’ve made a note to report here when it’s resolved.
If you use any link that includes /wp-admin/ to reach the post editor it will open up the classic editor.

Thank you, I’d appreciate the heads-up when its fixed. It’s critical that I try to keep things smooth and error free for the students. I’m already forcing them to adapt to a new tool, so it’s important to me that I keep their anxiety at a minimum. :)
In the meantime, I’ll keep directing them to use the wp-admin links. I’m so glad that’s remaining as a back-up!
