Tags Disappeared from Global Tag Page
-
What is a tag spammer? I’m reading the forum on tags and I gather it’s someone who over tags. On July 8/08 I lost all my videos and none of my tags appeared on the global tag page. My videos were up the next day. But most of my tags are gone.
I know that I have too many tags but I didn’t think you could be punished for that – I just thought that your tags might not get picked up. I started tagging very specifically because my tag “dog” didn’t appear in the global tag page so I became very specific.
How do I get my relevant tags back on the global tag page – ie my tag “Chautauqua Institute”, “Travel with Dogs”,”children with autism and dogs” is gone “water safety videos and dogs” is gone etc. etc. etc.etc.
The google engines were linking to some of my wordpress global tags and now the tags are gone.
If this is a punitive action -is it permanent? How can I redeem myself??

Do get all your tags into the system, the total number of tags/categories combined, needs to be no more than 12. It’s a shame that you see this as punitive. The reality is that some abuse the system with 100’s of tags to a post. A line has to be drawn, somewhere, which is consistent and fair to all.

The only reason I thought it could be punitive is that I read that you could be reported for being a tag spammer and they could remove all your tags. Until today I never heard the expression “tag spammer” How do I get my tags working again?
Thanks

Thank you for your quick reply I appreciate this. I use pages instead of posts and there is no place to insert a tag when you add a new page. Is there any way I can get around this?
Thanks

Tags and categories cannot be assigned to pages, which is why you are not showing in the global tags pages.
-
And I apologize, I did not know you were referring to pages when talking about tags. You’re like the 3rd or 4th person discussing the same issue, and the threads look the same after a while :)

It is not a published rule, but that’s how it works. We don’t care for over-tagging here at WordPress.com

When you said it’s not a published rule -does that mean someone at wordpress.com reported me? I didn’t mean to break any rules – I just want my tags to appear on the global tag page. I’m very new to blogging and tagging. How can I correct this siutation and redeem myself with the wordpress.com establishment.
Thanks

No, you were not reported by anyone. This happens automatically. If you want your posts to appear in global listings, add some tags to them (note: not pages). Keep the number of tags and categories (a combination of the two) under 12.

Thank you very much. How do you explain that all my tags and categories appeared in the global tag page and then suddenly disappeared on July 8/08. Is wordpress.com using new software?
Thanks again

No. Plus, you said you were using them on Pages, which is not possible. I would have to see a specific URL with your posts successfully displaying to take a look at whatever the issue was. For now on, though, simply take my aforementioned advice. That will work for you.

What I did under my post “THIS WAS SUPPOSED TO BE A DAILY JOURNAL BUT IT GREW” I added tags as I went along and it worked until July 8/08. I would switch to posts instead of pages but my site wouldn’t look right.

“It is not a published rule, but that’s how it works. We don’t care for over-tagging here at WordPress.com “
thats fair enough, but I dont think I was particularly out of line. It was a post on free events in london this weekend and I included tags of those events and some of the artists playing because I thought it might be of interest to the people who were into those bands.
I rarely have more than 3/4 tags on my posts.
I understand the reason for it, but dont understand why its not a published rule, because I checked the FAQs which were quite clear that it didnt matter how many tags you use and the end result was it wasted a lot of my time and narked me off a bit.

I’ve had the same issue with my tags dropping suddenly in the past few days.
So if the tags and categories are reduced to 12 in combination, how long before the site gets listed in the global tags? -
I’m not sure, but it can’t hurt to contact staff and let them know you’ve done it. Getting off the “No Global Page Links” list might be a manual thing they have to do.

Also, realize if your blog is rated Mature that the links will go out to the Global Tag Pages, but none will come back to your blog. So make sure your blog hasn’t been rated too Adult before you go deleting a lot of tags; if you have been so rated, deleting those tags would be extremely counterproductive, since they WILL still show up in Technorati, etc.
One way to test if you’ve been set “Mature” is to make sure you’ve put your blog URL in full under “website” on your profile page and post a comment in the forum. If the name is not a clickable link to your blog, it’s very likely you’ve been so designated (assuming you didn’t screw up the link; start with http of course).
