In the presentation section there’s the widgets tag. in there you’ll find one for adding tags to the blog. i think thats the best you’ll get. Though some off line blogging tools (such as windows live writer) can let you add tags directly in the post, nut only for selected sites. Currently WP.com isnt one of the supported sites.

    Actually categories double as tags.

If you want to add tags seperate from your categories, please see this post on the topic:

    Hope this helps,

Ummm .. at wordpress.com Categories and Tags are the same thing. Technorati spiders pick up all categories without any difficulties. Lorelle also provides an excellent tagging method here http://lorelle.wordpress.com/2005/10/14/a-tagging-bookmarklet-for-wordpress-and-wordpresscom-users/
You can also use the Technorti tagging built into BlogDesk as well as Windows Live writer and Keotags has a tag generator. I have used all of them and abandoned bothering because Technorati picks up the categories I assign.

@drmike lol – simultaneous typing and it also appears that you taught me well :D

Hi, folks – I just entered my first post today, and was also wondering about ‘tags.’ I see above that tags=categories, which is one question answered -thanks.

On WordPress.com homepage, there are links listed under “Right now in tags”. I wanted my post to be found under one or more of those tags. I found “thoughts” was a relevant category, so I went back and added that (as, ironically, an afterthought).

However, the “thoughts” link from the wordpress home page does not see the post, as far as I can tell (I looked at the time point where it ought to show up). I also used a category “The 60s” on the post from the start, and that does not show up in the tags list (including those under the “more” link).

Did I do something wrong? Do these have to be added at the time of original posting? Thanks, oh experienced ones…

The best way to get a speedy and accurate answer to questions you ask on the forum is to provide:

    (1) the link to your blog
    (2) the link(s) to any post(s) or page(s) your require help with

Now for your answer->Dashboard -> Manage -> Posts
Here you will see the posts you made. Click on “Edit”.
Once the post is open look at the Categories box on the right hand side and type in the Category you want to add and click “Add”. Continue to do this until you have added all the ones you want to the post.
Now click “Save” in the Editor box.
When you view your blog the published post will now have Categories and when you click on them they will take you to the wordpress.com tag pages.

Thank you, timethief. I appreciate your advice to a newbie.

Here is my brand new blog, with its single post: http://berkeleybarb.wordpress.com/

I had already added the two categories before I wrote (Thoughts; The 60s) and they were both checked for this post, but I followed your instructions through again to be sure I had done everything. The two categories appear on the published post.

The problem is that, from http://www.wordpress.com, on the “Right now in tags” list, the post doesn’t show up via the “Thoughts” link , and “The 60s” doesn’t show up as a tag on that list at all. Having the tags attached to the post, I want to know how to make the post show up via the “Right now” links.

Is it possible that I checked a box saying ‘keep it hidden’ or something? Or failed to check one saying “make it public”? I have looked around and couldn’t find anything like that, but there is a lot of space to lose a checkbox like that…
    Tx

I think things show up on the Right Now page only when they’re originally posted: adding tags at a later date doesn’t bounce them to the Right Now section, although they should be on the relevant tag pages themselves.

In other words, if you didn’t add the post RIGHT NOW, it won’t be in that section. Only the tags for the most recently posted posts on WordPress will be there.

    @rain
This was actually double posted and has been dealt with as much as possible here https://en.forums.wordpress.com/topic.php?id=11595
    I’m sorry I forgot to cross-reference :(
