Tags not showing up in cloud

I have been going through my posts, adding tags to old posts that didn’t have them. I noticed that tags I had added in the past are not showing up in my tag cloud. Of the new tags I added today, some show up when the cloud is refreshed, but not all. I’m under the 50 tag limit I saw posted, so I’m not sure why some of my tags don’t show up. If I manually type in the url to the tags (e.g. http://ntalan.wordpress.com/tag/er) then the posts in that tag are listed. Could it be my theme? A bug?

The sidebars are cached so at times it may take an hour or so, or several for them to update.

Right. But tags I’ve added in the past – months ago – are not in the cloud either. And of the tags I added today, some are there, some are not. Tags that were added this afternoon, over 4 hours ago, are not in the cloud. The tag in the example in my original post was added 2 months ago.

The tags that display vs the ones that don’t: are they the ones you use more? I’m wondering if the limit is not lower than 50 tags. I myself use an ungodly number of categories (something like 210!) but my tag cloud only shows, I think, 28.

Hm. The tags that don’t show are ones I don’t use often. However, there are tags that do appear that have less posts than the ones that don’t. For example, the tag “red” appears in the cloud and has 5 posts. The tag “blue” does not appear, and has 10 posts. If there’s a relationship, I’m not sure what it is!
45 tags appear in my cloud. I wonder why only 28 of yours show up. Could it be the tags with the most posts appear in the cloud? Though that wouldn’t explain my red and blue example above.

I put the tag cloud widget below the categories widget for this very reason; it’s flukey. I wonder now if the ones that show up are the ones that are most popular on WP rather than our individual blogs. Because I use one called “Operation Global Media Domination” quite a bit, but only one other person on the planet does, and it’s not in that tag cloud, although normal-ish ones I hardly use are, like “News.”

The 45 tag number is the maximum that I remember from staff although I don’t know where the thread is that mentioned it.

Interesting. Thanks for the info. So I wonder if I get rid of some of my tags and go back to categories, will the ones that are left show up.
I like the theory that it’s WP tags that show up rather than our own, although some odd ones do show up (“suicide bird” – don’t ask), and other more mainstream ones (“breastfeeding”) do not.
