Tags that were in alphabetical order and now appearing in random order. Why?
-
Hi. I am having problems with tags at the bottom of individual posts not displaying alphabetically. When keying posts I try to enter tags alphabetically but sometimes they are in random order. However when the post is published it usually sorts them into alphabetical order. However I have noticed that a number of posts that previously looked fine have suddenly re-ordered the tag list into a random sequence. I have tried manually correcting these i.e. deleting the tags and re-entering them manually and that seems to work for a few hours but then the tags go out of sequence. The blog is http://www.apopfansdream.wordpress.com and an example of a post with non-alphabetical tags is http://apopfansdream.wordpress.com/2014/06/22/the-hits-album-2-cbs-1985/
Thanks, Paul

I see tags in alphabetical order and I see something else you need to address ASAP. All reasons for non-appearance of posts on WordPress.COM Topics pages (categories and tags) can be found here > http://en.support.wordpress.com/topics/#missing-posts
As you have assigned a combined total that exceeds 15 Categories/Tags to your posts, you need to edit and delete. http://en.support.wordpress.com/posts/edit-posts-screen/ After removal of the excess categories and/or tags note it may take several days for your posts to begin displaying there.
You are inadvertently spamdexing AKA tag spamming. And, you ought to be more concerned about your posts not appearing and being well ranked on Google and Bing SERPS (search results pages) than not appearing on the WordPress.com Topics pages because it’s search engines that send a significant flow of traffic to blogs and they can choose to bury your content where the sun don’t shine for tag spamming.
The rule of thumb is to assign to your posts the least, not the most, combined number of only relevant categories and tags that accurately describe the individual post content.

Timethief. Thanks for your reply. The reason I use so many tags is because each of my posts is a review of a compilation album and I am tagging it with the artist/band names. Nearly all the compilations will have 30 or so artists. I didn’t realise the effect it would have. It’s going to impossible to determine which tags to use so I might just stick with one or two categories per post.

Understood. However, I am sorry but I cannot help you with the spamdexing issue other than to say edit the posts and reduce the tag spam.

I wouldn’t worry too much about tag pages: I’ve gotten two referrals from tag pages in the last three years. And I have over a dozen blogs.
From the perspective of useability of your own site, you might want to stick with the way you’ve been tagging things. It will make for easier navigation.
I wish WP.com would offer us the option of having “local only” tags in addition to global tags. It would prevent issues like this.

Way back when I thought that getting rid of local tags was a good thing. Now I don’t think so at all. :(

I have edited the posts and removed the tags. I’ll just rely on categories [one per post] from now on. However how long will those now-deleted tags appear in Google search results as they’re now leading to dead links?
Thanks to all who have responded.
