tailored comment moderation

Someone is leaving rude comments on my blog. I’d like to block this person from leaving future comments without this resulting in the deletion of what he’s posted so far, as that would cause most of the dialogue thus far to stop making any sense. Alternately, I would like to impose moderation on all comments for this specific post; that way I can delete his comments as they come up. But I can’t find a way to do either of these things, and as it stands, because I approved earlier ones, his comments are now posted directly without moderation. And I don’t want to close all comments, as I’d love to see the discussion proceed without his input. Can you advise?

It sounds like the best thing for you to do right now would be to change your discussion settings so that you have to approve each comment on your blog before it appears. You can do this via your Settings -> Discussion page and selecting “An administrator must always approve the comment.”

If you’d like to block that user in particular, you can add him to your comment blacklist by following this guide.

Thanks for the advice! Can you confirm that if I block this user, his earlier comments will still show up? It’s not clear to me what the scope of the block is, and I don’t want this action to delete everything he’s ever written – I just don’t want to hear from him anymore starting now. In the meantime, the always-approve option is doing nicely. :)

  • If you block a user, the existing comment will still show. You could need to delete those manually. It only blocks future comments.
