Take blog temporarily offline

  • Unknown's avatar

The best way to take a blog offline temporarily. I ‘inherited’ a blog and I need to research some potential photo copyright issues. I want to restrict access to blogs but I do not want to lose the google ranking. Some suggestions making it private or turning on maintenance mode – any advice and instructions on how to do it for a .com website

  • Hi there,

We have a system in place for making sites ‘private’ on WordPress.com, but it may be the case that you are referring to a self-hosted websites, which are sites that you create on a “traditional web host” like Bluehost, GoDaddy, etc.

The process for taking that kind of site offline temporarily is different. What is the URL of your site so we can look it up in our system?

    it is a wordpress.com site (https://jonettecrowley.wordpress.com)
It is no longer actively used as we moved the content to a self-hosted site. (https://centerforcreativeconsciousness.com/jonette-crowley-blog)
but left it online since I did not know how to forward the individual blogs since our .org site url structure does not match (.com includes the date) so the links were broken. On the .org site I just marked them as private to give me time to research photo rights (let me know if there is a better way to do that)

    Thanks

  • You can certainly make the site private:

For what it’s worth, the redirect upgrade tries to send to the same address with the date, but WordPress will often just figure it out and send to the right URL anyway. If it doesn’t, your host can often help with a redirect for any links that aren’t working that way.
