take site offline temporary

    how do you take your site offline while you are working on it? I don’t understand how the “plug ins” work…tried downloading a plug in for a “maintenance screen” but it did not work.
    May I ask why it automatically gets published? Could there not be a time to create then publish? For newbies this is kind of important. :)

    If you would like to change the visibility of your site, you can make it private by adjusting your settings. Here are the instructions:

    Third party plugins cannot be installed on WordPress.com sites. This is a security risk as we cannot vet all outside code and it puts our users, their sites, and our servers at risk.

    Plugins are only usable on self-hosted WordPress.org sites.

    I know the difference between .com and .org can get confusing, so here’s a breakdown of the benefits of each:
