Takeover of site navigation and title when embedding WP.tv?
-
Howdy!
Could someone please explain how this takeover of my site’s navigation and header came to be and what needs to be done to eliminate it?
Thanks

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

Just adding that this takeover also interferes with MY SITES. When clicking on it from one of those posts, rather than opening the dashboard for wpcommaven in the sidebar, it opens the dashboard for my primary site instead. (screenshot available in my Media Library)

Hi justjennifer,
Interesting, I haven’t been able to replicate this on my end yet. Would you be able to send the exact steps you took before this happened?
Also, which operating system are you using?
We can then do some testing :)

@gemmacevans – thanks for having a look.
I discovered that the navigation and header were like this on those posts when I visited them, first from my Google Search Console and then directly on site from WP Admin. The posts did not display like this when I originally published them.
The only other post on my site that I have been able to find so far and which has a WordPress.tv embed displays normally: https://wpcommaven.wordpress.com/2013/07/28/my-top-takeaways-from-wordcamp-san-francisco/
OS is Win10Pro v1803 on both computers and both FF and Chrome (latest) are involved.

Hi Jennifer,
This is very weird.
It seems to be related to the specific videos, as I can replicate it on another site if I try to embed the same videos there using the shortcode.
Are there any other affected posts on your site you can point to? And can you please share the link of the page where you got this screen shot? https://cloudup.com/imxQLYTUC0b I can’t find where that page appears.
I’ve asked our devs to take a look at why this is happening. I’ll let you know what they say.
I do notice this doesn’t happen if you embed the video using the sharing link, e.g.
https://videopress.com/v/64R27Yxc, rather than the shortcode, so you can try updating your posts in that regard to prevent this. As I’m able to replicate the issue we don’t need to see it live on your site to troubleshoot this further. -
@kokkieh I only saw your reply now.

I don’t wonder if the wp.tv sharing link wasn’t changed at some point. As I mentioned earlier, neither of those posts appeared like this when they were first published.
FWIW-the “takeover” also interferes with the footer of my site.

I haven’t been able to locate any other affected posts via a search.
And can you please share the link of the page where you got this screen shot?
That “screen shot” is how cloudup captures the URL of a page. One of the options on the cloudup Edit screen is to add a direct URL. You can see this if you look at the full set https://cloudup.com/c3yeAp74xmN as no image appears or on the cloudup Edit page directly. (I added another screen capture of the cloudup Edit page in wpcommaven’s Media Library as it has information that I prefer not to share here.)
Thanks for passing this along to the devs. I’ll update the link on my posts. Thanks.

Just to double check, did you search for wpvideo to find any other posts?
We’ve got this duplicated on test sites here, by the way, so I’m just hoping to catch all possible instances on your site so you can replace those links.

Thanks @ supernovia – that keyword helped me find the others
Only one other post has been taken over:

Hi Jennifer,
I’m glad you found the affected posts and corrected them. We’ll update you as soon as we hear back from our developers.
-
@justjennifer, we’ve confirmed this is a bug with the VideoPress shortcode on WordPress.com. We’re reporting it to our developers, but it’s tough to say when it will be fixed, especially given that most resources are currently devoted to Gutenberg.
Going forward please use the link embed method for now. I’ll let you know if there’s any more info on this.

Thanks, folks! Much appreciated!
/We now return you to your regularly scheduled programming.
