Taking a wordpress.org blog on my server and migrating it to a wordpress.com blo

    Hello,

I’ve searched the FAQ’s and forums and haven’t quite found the answers to what I’m looking for and hoping someone can help.

    I have a blog at http://www.michaelclinard.com/blog
Its hosted by Dreamhost as I downloaded the software from the wordpress.org site and I love wordpress. The issue is that I will soon be getting a Livebooks website which requires those (primarily photographers) who buy these sites to have them hosted by Livebooks’ own servers which means I will be leaving Dreamhost in the next couple weeks.

Seems like I could just very easily store the blog on my Livebooks’ server space but for the kind of website I’m getting from them, they only offer 1GB of storage space on their server for what have you (.zip files for clients, .pdf’s, etc) which will soon be not enough for the blog and various files I need to store there for myself/people to download.

My question is this: Is it possible to get a new blog here at wordpress.com, export my old wordpress.org blog hosted by Dreamhost and reupload it to the new blog at wordpress.com having it save all of my old posts, images, etc? I guess I’m up to about 300mb of data on my blog currently (images, embedded video, etc.)

I understand that if I were wanting to have domain mapping to retain the name http://www.michaelclinard.com/blog, I’d have to pay $10/year at wordpress.com but have also seen where Dreamhost offers wordpress hosting for 6.95/month but I just want to see if what I’m talking about getting as far as getting the free blog makes sense as the only add-on I’d be in need of is the domain mapping.

Also, if this is a wordpress.org forum issue, my apologies. Thinking of posting it there as well since it touches on both wordpress iterations. Any and all help or recommendations regarding this matter is greatly appreciated.

    Many thanks in advance,
    Mike

    In no order:

You could not map to here: http://www.michaelclinard.com/blog,
but you could to here: http://blog.michaelclinard.com
We do not support the www here.

Space is not an issue – you would have 3000mb

You cannot upload certain filetypes here – like .zip, .rar and others. These would need hosting elsewhere.

To move – upgrade your current blog to at least WordPress 2.5
Then go to Manage > Export, save the file
Here go to Manage > Import and upload it
You are given the option of importing files

Does that help? If it raises more questions do ask – much better to to be sure about a move.

    Hi Mark,

Many thanks for your quick reply. In reference to my inability to retain the virgule (forward slash) before “blog” it would work for me to have blog.website.com.

I take it that it would be sometime before the blog crept back up in the ranks with my site or in google/yahoo searches, no?

I don’t intend to use wordpress to host archive files for myself/clients, that I will use on the server hosting my website. That said, it seems that should I be in need of more space for the blog, I could always buy the space.

    Thanks again,
    Mike

If you change URLs, your blog will lose pagerank and Technorati authority, but if you promote well, it will regain those within a few months. I think it was four months for me.

Thx for the reply Rain. The big move will probably be taking place in the next couple weeks. Another issue I just thought of: What will become of the images? Do you happen to know if I will be in need of reuploading them all into the appropriate places of the text or when imported, is that taken care of, too?

    Many thx,
    M

It depends where your images are hosted. If they’re at Photobucket or Flickr or something, they should be fine. If you hosted them on your hosted account and you let the account lapse, they will all go POOF.

But I THINK there may be a new bulk uploader for images. I remember hearing about it, but I haven’t looked for it or used it. So that might save time.

The real problem – the way I see it – is not bulk-uploading all your past images, but having them correctly linked in the posts :-|

If you uploaded all of them in a simple folder, then it’s easy, you could do a “search&replace” on the export file, before re-importing in wordpress.com, from “www.foobar.com/images”, to “files.blog.wordpress.com/wp-content/bla/bla” … But, if you have all the images in /wp-content/2006/02/07/foobar.jpg then it’s a real pain because you need to change every link by hand, as your new image folder would be something like /2008/06/02/image.jpg even for 2006 images.

I don’t know if I made sense (english not my first language).

The fact wordpress.com importer, unlike wordpress.org does not import images it’s the reason keeping me back to make the same move you mc1inard are planning.
