Taking an unused domain name
-
Hi there! I want to start a website and have seen that the domain name I want has been discarded by a previous user. It does not offer it to me when I ask (just all the variations). How can I move forward?
The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

I didn’t write this and it’s not correct: “The blog I need help with is sleepproject.wordpress.com” – just to clarify!

If the domain is not currently available for use, there is nothing that can be done short of waiting until it is, as there are various factors that go into releasing a domain name back into the pool. WordPress does not have any control over when the names are made available. You can read more about domain names here: https://en.support.wordpress.com/domains/domain-expiration/

Hi there,
WordPress does not have any control over when the names are made available.
This is not accurate. First, “WordPress” refers to the software. Second, WordPress.com has complete control over what happens to WordPress.com domains.
Deleted addresses we do release under certain circumstances, but we never reassign an address that still exists, regardless of whether the owner is using it or not. You can find our policy in this regard here:

Thank you very much kristina and kokkieh this is all great learning for me, exactly what I needed :)
I have found this ‘deleted’ site, is there anything I can do?
https://sugarandspice.wordpress.com/I can’t find a website anywhere, on or off wordpress.com, that is actually using sugarandspice with .com or .org etc. (Though there are loads of variations, suggesting that ‘sugarandspice’ was taken a long time ago and is now disused as the link above suggests). But I want to build a website in WordPress, so I don’t want to purchase with a random domain vendor.
kokkieh can you advise me?
many thanks

That site matches an existing username, which is one of the criteria which prevents an address from being recycled, so you won’t be able to use that address. We cannot make any exceptions in this regard.
However, if are considering upgrading, you can register a custom domain, like sugarandspice.com, or .blog, or .boutique, or any of the other domain we offer that might still have that name available. In that case the free address you choose won’t matter, as visitors will only see your custom domain.
If you want to go that route, you can search for a custom domain instead on the new site process and select one of our upgrades plans. Or for an existing site, first buy the plan at My Site ->Plans before adding the domain at My Site ->Domains.
You can see all the domain extension we have available here:
