Taking ownership of a website

I have a client who’d like to take ownership of her website. It’s been built for her using wordpress but hosted elsewhere.

She’d like to have it hosted in her own plan with WordPress. The person who built it for her is happy to hand it over, but has said that it’s a custom Worpress installation, so she will need a server with cPanel? Can anyone advise how she goes about this? She’s very unfamiliar with the whole thing and I’m trying to assist, but I’m not much better at it!

  • Hi @kathy393809345, we don’t have cPanel here, so at the moment it’s a bit trickier to move a custom installation here. They would need to export the site, import it here, add the Business Plan so they can add outside themes and plugins, install and configure those as needed, and then finally point the domain to our servers.

Note that once she has the business plan, she would have chat-based support to help her through. I hope that helps!

Thanks so much for your reply @supernova.

I recently helped someone transfer ownership within Squarespace which was incredibly simple, so this is really disappointing :-(

Just to clarify… even though the site was built using WordPress… is it not the case that it can just be transferred over to appear in my client’s WordPress account under ‘my sites’ ?

And in order to get the online support… how would she sign up to the plan before getting the site transferred?

    Hi kathy393809345,

even though the site was built using WordPress… is it not the case that it can just be transferred over to appear in my client’s WordPress account under ‘my sites’ ?

That’s correct. It’s worth bearing in mind that WordPress.org is a separate entity from WordPress.com. WordPress.org sites are built differently, which is why transferring the site over in one go isn’t possible I’m afraid. We have some information which will guide you through the process of moving to WordPress.com though:

And in order to get the online support… how would she sign up to the plan before getting the site transferred?

She could start by creating a free site (with “.wordpress.com” in the address). Purchasing a paid plan will provide access to email and Live Chat support but we can still offer advice here in the meantime.

The existing domain can be mapped or transferred here whenever she is ready to make the switch — custom domains are needed before plugins and custom plugins can be installed on the Business plan so that’s something to consider.

We’ll be here if you have any more questions.

Thanks so much, you’ve both been really helpful.
