Tapping pic to see uncompressed version

  • Unknown's avatar

When I tap a picture on a page I am expecting it to bring up the uncompressed version of the picture. I get a blank page with a ‘not recognised’ signal. Any ideas?

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

Hi there, when you upload and insert an image in the post or page Editor, you can link the individual image after you insert it by clicking on the link icon in the toolbar while the image is highlighted. The direct image URL should already populate that link box and you can then click OK to create the link.

Let us know how that goes.

    Hello again Justjennifer,

I in a fog again. I am preparing the blog pages on an iPad Air. When I put a picture on the page I am choosing to put it in at ‘Full’ as it looks good on the page. However when I highlight the picture, the link icon at the bottom of the page slides off the bottom of the screen and I can’t see it again until I cancel the highlight.

The end result is that I have no link address showing in the edit box. I thought I had managed this once earlier on so I can’t be that far away from getting it right :)

    Thanks, Mike

Perhaps I should also have mentioned that I have not yet ‘published’ the first page so it is still in draft. Does that make any difference to this problem?

Hello again, So sorry I missed your reply.

I don’t have any way of checking this on the same device and cannot see unpublished posts, so I’ve gone ahead and tagged this thread for Staff input and assistance. Thanks for your patience while they get back to you.

One other important question, are you using the WordPress iPad app or doing this in the browser window (and which browser)?

I have published a page as this might be helpful to you. I am using the WordPress App on an iPad Air.

Hi @hawkinsuk, I see only one post and one page on your site. On the post on your main page, the images are not linked to the original file, so they cannot be clicked.

If you want those to open full-sized when clicked, open the post in the editor, click on the image to highlight it, then click the “Link” button in the top editor menu bar and the image url will automatically be inserted as a default. Then click the Add Link button at bottom right. Do that with each image and the update the post.

Hi @thesacredpath – that’s pretty much what I advised in my earlier reply but there seems to be an issue when using the iPad app.

    Here’s what @hawkinsuk wrote above:

  • On the mobile app this works a bit differently. There if you tap the image, it should automatically open the image options.

Scroll down until you see the URL field. Tap the Copy button. Then scroll up to where you see the Link To field. Paste the URL there. Now the image should be linked to the full size version if you update the post.

    1. I go into ‘Edit’ – click on ‘+’ sign – choose pic – click Insert 1

    2. Hightlight the image (turns blue)

    3. Media Options Box with 2 options – ‘Remove Image’ or ‘Edit’

    4. Click ‘Edit’. Then presented with Media Options Box with choices: ‘Alignment’, ‘Link To’, ‘Size’, ‘Alt Text’, ‘Caption’.

    5. Press ‘Link To’. Presented with Link To Box. Blinking cursor waiting for input.

What next? What is the input it is looking for? No ‘copy’ or other buttons to press other than to return to Media Settings.

    We’ll get there!

  • Okay, it looks like this might not be available in the iOS app yet, only on Android. I’m just waiting on someone to confirm that, but for now it looks like you’ll have to edit the post in a browser to add that link to the image.

  • If it helps, I don’t see the URL field for an uploaded image in the iOS app on an iPhone. Going into Media doesn’t have that either. I have the most up to date version of the app.

  • Thanks for confirming, Darcie!

So, @hawkinsuk, you’ll need to use a browser to do that step for now. The mobile browser on your iPad should work for this.

  • Another option, though it’s kind of a detour: go to My Site > Media, tap on the image you’d like to link to, tap the share icon to the upper right then “Copy”. You can then go back to the post editor and paste the copied URL to the “Link To” field.

Thanks everyone for the input. No time now but will try out these ideas and will report back on which worked best for me :) Mike

It now works! Sorted by using the browser and not the app for my iPad Air. This is an issue that’s been bugging me for a long time so today’s a good day! Thank you all for staying with it :)) Mike

Great! Thanks for coming back and letting us know and for all your input on the iOS app too. Have a great meander! :)
