Tar files

Downloaded blog for a backup.. Received a ‘tar’ file which I have not clue how to open? I installed 7-zip but still am lost

  • Hi there,

What exactly did you download? Can you give a link to the site, and tell me where you downloaded this file?

The only .tar download we have on WordPress.com is if you download a WordPress.com site’s entire media library. So you’d use software like 7-zip to uncompress that archive and create a folder on your computer with image files of everything in your site’s media library.

We don’t offer any option on WordPress.com to download a full backup of your entire site. We do have a content-export option to export your posts and pages. That will give you a .xml file that’s meant to be read by computers, not humans :)

You can use that file to import your content to another site.

I downloaded the entire media library which also states that it downloads your entire site for backup purposes.
I also download the contents file but got very little back. I did unzip the xml file and saw I did not receive my contents back…not even 1/16. And I am a human not a computer.

Your literature states: You own your data. What a farce. Maybe you are both but I was insulted because I believed your hyperbole as fact and then find out you lie.

I need to find everything and get it back into my control.

It should be easy but you guys make it difficult so we cannot leave.

I have cancer and I do not know how long I will live. Neither do you, by the way. I thought I might could put it all into a book but NO you hold onto our writing for what purpose? You do not know me,so what good is it for you:?

    Thanks for answering.

Try to be transparent for the next generation of bloggers.

The Export Media Library button does just that. It downloads everything in your Media Library, not your posts/pages. The Export content button does that. The idea being you have your content if you wish to move to another host.

However if you wish to put the contents of your site into a book that can easily be achieved by companies that do that sort of thing. Some offer limited free pdf versions of your content. Some do impressive hardback books too. You just need that xml file and to still have access to the images on your site.

Thank you for your response. I appreciate your time.

I am not dumb. The Export content button does not download all your content so you are mistaken. I opened it because I can open an xml file and then I learned how to look at the tar files…so I am not dumb even though from what you all keep writing me you think I am.

The media files I could care less about. I dropped them all in so therefore would you not assume that I have the photos in my many backup of photos?

Thank you, again. I do not mean to insult you. I try to be kind. The responses here were not very helpful. so I will consider this closed.

  • The file from https://wordpress.com/support/export/#export-your-content-to-another-blog-or-platform will give you all of your posts, pages, and comments. It’s designed to imported by anything that will accept the WordPress export format.

The file from https://wordpress.com/support/export/#exporting-the-media-library will contain all of your uploaded media. These are just the raw media files, not intended to be imported anywhere (any place that accepts the WordPress export format will automatically bring along all attached media as long as the blog is publicly accessible).

As for making a book, there are a few services like https://www.blogbooker.com/ and https://www.fastpencil.com/ which will accept the WordPress export file to make a book. They won’t need the media export, they’ll use the .xml export files and automatically bring along all attached media as long as the blog is publicly accessible.

FastPencil does not import xml files. You have to go through a good many steps to do this. I have used them before and knew this. They are working on getting an xml converter for WP.

You might want to explain this a little more.

I now know from reading a lot of pages about WordPress.com that Automatic owns my content. This is not exactly explained when you sign up as I did years ago. You say, “You own your content…” which of course is a lie. You do not. Automatic can use everything you have and will always own it.

I wanted to download a copy of everything for a backup copy that I could read or my daughter could read, one day when I am dead. In the Media Export explanation in WordPress.com it states you can but this, too, is not true. You get media files which I uploaded so I do not need those. I tried the content Export and got very little of my 1000++ post..

This has been a waste of a couple of days for me.

Thank You for answering even though your answer was not accurate. Your time was valuable so I appreciate the time.

    Cheers

I’m sorry you are still having issues but have you tried exporting specific content rather than everything/all?

As for making a book, there are a few services like https://www.blogbooker.com/

I’ve used this company in the past with acceptable results.

    Thanks.

I think you are right. I will export by years not all the content at once. I think that will work better. Might cost more but will get the job done.

Thank you for your kindness. I have been rather overwhelmed. I did learn how to extract xml files and tar files. That was a fun learning experience.

I did not mean to be cross with any of you.

blogbook is also limited in the content one can export or import, whichever….
