The “home” tab is defined in the underlying theme files and we are not allowed to modify those. This is not something that can be done via the CSS upgrade.

okay. i saw a post from ben eastaugh on his tarski blog, which says, “Good good. I’m happy to say that as of Tarski 1.7, you’ll be able to change the name of the ‘Home’ link in the Tarski Options page, which should eliminate the need for hacks like this one (if you take a look at the Tarski home page you’ll see I’ve changed it to ‘Blog’).” so I was assuming it was now possible with the CSS upgrade.

any other thoughts? or it’s just not possible? thank you for your help.

No. WordPress.COM is not using that version of Tarski. It is an older version and wordpres seldom, if ever updates to a newer version of a theme.
The themes used here have to be review for security issues and modified to work with the restrictions and features used here at wordpress.COM, so it isn’t just a matter of loading the new theme.
You could send in a request to staff and ask that they adopt the newer version. They have done this with at least two other themes, Sandbox and The Journalist, but they don’t do it with all themes. http://suppport.wordpress.com/contact/
