teacher/private blog for parents
-
I am a teacher and trying to add parents just to view my blog. I don’t want them to have to sign up to work press to see it since it is private. Is this going to work?

No, in order for folks you invite to view your private site on WordPress.com there is a need to keep track of who they are.
They are identified via the email address they use to sign up for a wp account.
They do not need to have a blog: they do need to establish an email address (in the form of a wp.com account) so they can be identified.
This is not so different from amazon accounts or facebook private groups or Flickr private groups or Google+ private circles or any other such sites which require a login in order to participate in a private area.
You could set up a blog that is not open to search engines for parents (or others) to view information you want to publish publicly.

the middle option:Ask search engines not to index this site. – If you want all human visitors to be able to read your blog, but want to block web crawlers for search engines, this is the setting for you.
