    Protagonists

The protagonists of the Naruto series are Naruto Uzumaki, Sasuke Uchiha, Sakura Haruno, and Kakashi Hatake who form “Team 7” of Konohagakure. After Sasuke Uchiha’s departure from Konohagakure at the end of Part I, the team disbands. During Part II, the team reforms as Team Kakashi with two new members: Sai, who occupies Sasuke’s position, and Yamato, who becomes the acting Captain. [ch. 285]. During the Fourth Great Ninja War, Team 7 reunites to fight Madara Uchiha who later becomes Kaguya Ootsutsuki. Once the War is over, Sasuke has a final battle with Naruto which looks like they are no longer Team 7. After the fight ends, Team 7 is finally reunited permanently.

Naruto Uzumaki (うずまき ナルト Uzumaki Naruto) is the titular protagonist of the series. He was the first character created by Kishimoto during the conception of the series, and was designed with many traits from other shōnen characters.[7] He is often ridiculed by the Konohagakure villagers, as he is the host of Kurama, the Nine-Tailed Fox that attacked Konoha.[ch. 2] He compensates for this with his cheerful and boisterous personality, vowing to never give up on any goal he sets. In particular, Naruto has ambitions of becoming Hokage, the leader of Konohagakure, in order to gain the villagers’ respect and be able to protect both them and the world. Over the course of the series, Naruto befriends many foreign and Konoha people, and has a significantly positive impact on their lives to the point where, by the middle of Part II, he is seen as an international hero.[ch. 237] Naruto’s voice actor in the Japanese anime is Junko Takeuchi, and he is voiced by Maile Flanagan in the English adaptation.[12][13]
    Sasuke Uchiha

Sasuke Uchiha (うちは サスケ Uchiha Sasuke) is Naruto’s rival. Designed by Kishimoto, to be the “cool genius” he felt was an integral part of an ideal rivalry.[1] Sasuke’s older brother, Itachi Uchiha, killed the rest of their family.[ch. 224] Because of this, Sasuke’s sole desire is to kill his brother, and he develops a cold and withdrawn personality, seeing people as tools to further his goals, although also gaining the affection of most of the girls he knew, much to his annoyance. When made a member of Team 7, Sasuke seems to begin to consider them precious to the point of risking his life to protect them, while focusing less on revenge at the start of the series. Following an encounter and subsequent defeat at the hands of his brother in Part I, however, Sasuke severs his ties and leaves the village to seek more power from a man named Orochimaru. Sasuke is voiced by Noriaki Sugiyama, and his English voice actor is Yuri Lowenthal.[12][13]
    Sakura Haruno
    Main article: Sakura Haruno

Sakura Haruno (春野 サクラ Haruno Sakura) is the sole female member of Team 7. While creating the character, Kishimoto has admitted that he had little perception of what an ideal girl should be.[1] As a child, Sakura was teased by other children because of her large forehead, a feature Kishimoto tried to emphasize in Sakura’s appearance. She was comforted by Ino Yamanaka.[14] The two developed a friendship, however, as the two continued to grow, they became increasingly distant due to their shared affection for Sasuke Uchiha. During the early of Part I, Sakura is infatuated with Sasuke and resents Naruto Uzumaki, although ironically, Sasuke views her as “annoying” and Naruto has feelings for her.[ch. 3] Her perception on Naruto eventually changes, however, and she comes to see him as a friend and her feelings for Sasuke grow into deep love. In the Japanese anime, her voice actress is Chie Nakamura, and she is voiced by Kate Higgins in the English adaptation.[12][15]
    Kakashi Hatake
    Main article: Kakashi Hatake

Kakashi Hatake (はたけ カカシ Hatake Kakashi) is the leader of Team 7 and the sensei to Naruto, Sasuke, and Sakura. Kishimoto had originally intended for Kakashi to be introduced earlier in the series than he actually was, and created him as an easygoing person that would be able to keep the members of Team 7 in check.[8] Kakashi treats his leadership position with a mysterious, detached manner, and is consistently late to meetings as a result. During a gaiden on his past, Kakashi is revealed to have been trained by Naruto’s father during the Third Great Ninja War and obtained his Sharingan eye from one of his teammates, Obito Uchiha[ch. 243] Kakashi’s Japanese voice actor in the anime is Kazuhiko Inoue, and his English voice actor is Dave Wittenberg.[12][16]
