technorati etc.

Blogging is crazy! I could not believe how much madness is out there in the blogsphere.

I am trying to get some more exposure to my blog:

    http://www.lefthandexit.wordpress.com

I have claimed my blog there with the “quick claim” option. Are the other “claiming” options more powerful?

Is gaining “authority” anymore than writing cool stuff and having people look at it?

I was proud of myself for successfully (the first try, mind you) embedding the “add to technorati favorites” button on my blog!

    I am addicted!!!

Welcome to wordpress.com. I think this Beginner’s Guide will be helpful if you are looking for basic how to’s https://en.forums.wordpress.com/topic.php?id=11280

I’m new to blogging – where do I start? http://faq.wordpress.com/2007/08/16/im-new-to-blogging-where-do-i-start/

There’s a Critique My Blog thread in the off-topic forum https://en.forums.wordpress.com/topic.php?id=10075

There is also a thread you can plug your blog in in the off-topic forum
    https://en.forums.wordpress.com/topic.php?id=7101

And here are some ways to promote your blog.
    A. Find technorati http://www.technorati.com on the web. Register and create an account, claim your blog(s), tag them, create a watchlist, register your favorites. You will find that the site has excellent instructions to help you work through all the steps. That assistance is not available here.

YAY! you have done this already. :)

    B. Also be sure to register your blog so you get the attention of search engines https://en.forums.wordpress.com/topic.php?id=5859&page&replies=9#post-37917
Submit your site here http://www.submitexpress.com/. Submit it to ONLY the top 40 search engines. They’ll ask you to paste their code on your site. You will then get a few emails asking to confirm your submissions.

    C. If you want to be sure you’ve covered the bases when it comes to blog promotion then this is a helpful link http://faq.wordpress.com/2006/11/15/more-traffic/.

    D. We also have many threads in the forum search box on increasing traffic to your blog. From time to time we start another one reiterate everything that’s been said before and occasionally we add new ideas.

    In a nutshell:
    (1) Promoting your wordpress.com blog will be more effective if you edit your profile and link your wordpress.com username to your wordpress.com blog.

    (2) Promoting your wordpress.com blog will be more effective if you regularly post high quality, original content posts to your blog and build a faithful readership.

    (3) Promoting your wordpress.com blog will be more effective if you tag your posts with categories that are specific to your blogging topics.

    (4) Promoting your wordpress.com blog will be more effective if you invest time and energy into leaving meaningful comments on other blogs, in forums and on websites related to your blogging topics.

    (5) Promoting your wordpress.com blog may be more effective if you join social networks.

Anyone else not getting pinged at Technorati? I ping directly there but I haven’t been added in four days.

  • Unknown's avatar

just wonder who’s possibly using a T. and what for, anyway?

(besides bloggers themselves, who ping T. to get listed on their pages, of course)

  • Unknown's avatar

I always have problems with Technorati pinging. I usually ping myself, wait an hour or two and then ping again. Usually after a few pings and lots of waiting, it will eventually get pinged.

  • Unknown's avatar

It’s funny; it always catches posts from one of my blogs, but not raincoaster.com. I manually ping it through pingoat every time I post and still it lags by sometimes days. ONLY on that blog though, not the others.

  • Unknown's avatar

Yes. In my short blogging lifespan I have already seen technorati be inconsistent with it’s updates. Sometimes for kicks I will check right after I post and it is right there, others it has been 24 hours. I don’t get the authority thing either, but I am not too worried about it. I did find that pinging a couple of times every two hours or so resulted in quicker updates in subsequent posts.

  • Unknown's avatar

Authority is how many sites (not posts) link to you within the last year. If a site links to you 3 times, you get 1 authority point.

Technorati authority and rank is explained in the Technorati blog
    /nod to jameswelch

  • Unknown's avatar

Today I was using this very thread to teach about Technorati and we checked my ranking at the start of reading the thread: 18,890. I growled, because I’ve gone down 4,000 places, then we read the thread. Then we checked again so I could explain more stuff. 19,800. Then I explained how Technorati is a little like the I Ching, only not so factual, and we checked again. 16,900.

    Funny/absurd.

  • Unknown's avatar

yeah, it is pretty weird, I checked both of my blogs earlier today and my authority was ZERO, and I checked again right now……….still ZERO. Unbelievable! They must be really crazy over at technorati, because I am sure people are linking my blogs like crazy….

Ok, maybe it is because nobody looks at mine!

Thanks for your input everyone! Happy blogging!

  • Unknown's avatar

Hey, I’ve had Technorati links on my blogs, too, like for ever.

And after all that time, the big questions I have are …

… does Technorati ranking really matter ? Does anyone around here honestly still use Technorati to find blogs (it’s all, like, so 2003).

And ain’t it possibly just some kind of big ego trip to be ‘up in the top x squillion ?

Or am I missing something ? Very probably.

  • Unknown's avatar

I read up on Technorati a few weeks ago and here’s what most people had to say:

Looking at the technorati web site and hitting refresh may result in different scores – Technorati knows about this, but for some reason can’t fix it. To get the actual and real value, click on “[edit]” (on your web site), then click on “[blogs]”. The value there is the real score, not what you see on the other pages.

My theory is that they are using multiple web servers and caching and the caching is not synchronized across each of the web servers. So when you hit refresh, you could be going to server #4 and get a different value than was cached in server #1.

The “edit” pages are supposed to be pulling live data and not cached. But this is all theories that I’ve read from other bloggers.

  • Unknown's avatar

Well, here’s more Technorati madness: It’s now showing links to my blog that were made in a blog that stopped updating in January of this year!

I never use Technorati to find other blogs; I just use it to find out where I stand, because I’m really competitive.

  • Unknown's avatar

    hello energetic,

I like your questions. both of them are very good ones.

however, I’ve got serious doubts that anyone will dare answer them, honestly.

although, in contrary to wordpress.com’s Global Tags, Technocrapy doesn’t require link to them to get listed, but their SERPs take ages to load (and they’re rarely what I was up to). also, on request to “inurl:technorati.com/tag wordpres.com” goog has shown me only two totally irrelevant links.

their support is very polite, though.

  • Unknown's avatar

    @rain
Good answer. Note that I’ve still got those T links, too. Guilty as charged …

  • Unknown's avatar

    Nods to options, too.

I wasn’t too sure at first about your reference to SERPS, though.

Here in London that typically refers to the State Earnings Related Pension Scheme.

It’s very slow to load. Typically around 65 years or so.

And that’s possibly even longer than Technorati’s Search Engine Results Page ;-).

  • Unknown's avatar

They finally got my blog. I looked through the list of recent posts but they missed one of my layouts. Hmm. So I just pinged that individual post.
