Template Help Please

    Can someone please help me with templates? At this point I have had to redo a singular page 4-5 times over again because I keep thinking that I understand how to work with templates but then keep messing it up somehow. I want to use the templates from the theme that I am using (‘Patterns Political’), but every time I do, it gets messed up.

    First, I tried editing the template itself and then changing it when I wanted to use the same template for a different page, but then I realized I was changing the template itself and not the page. So after looking at WordPress help videos, I thought I figured it out and created a page and copied and pasted the template blocks onto the new page, but that still changed it. Finally, I tried creating a new template all together and then editing that instead by copying and pasting blocks from the template I liked into the new template and applying it to the page and it still ends up changing the template itself.

    I am trying to create blog posts with anchor links for quick navigation so I am using a template with a sidebar at the top so that I can add the anchors. It looks and functions perfectly for the one page, but then when I try to create another page using the same template that’s when it all goes downhill and I keep accidentally deleting the work I’ve just done because I think I’m editing a page and not a template. What am I doing wrong? How do I fix this? Please somebody give me a step-by-step walkthrough because I feel like I’m going crazy trying to do this.

    Hi @gokralllaw, I can imagine how frustrating this is, especially after redoing your work so many times. The good news is that this is a very common problem, and it’s easy to fix once you know the difference.

    You are editing the template, which changes all pages, instead of the page content itself. The Solution:

    1. To edit a specific post, go to Posts > All Posts and click on your post. Do not go to Appearance > Editor.
    2. For your anchor link layout, the best way to reuse it is to save it as a Block Pattern.
    3. Once it is saved, you can insert that pattern on any new post without changing your main template.
