Templates to Pages?

  • Unknown's avatar

    Hi there,

I have realised that I was making my website’s pages as templates, which ended up being named ‘Home’, ‘Page’, ‘Single’, and ‘Single item: Post’.

Can someone please help me make these templates into pages, so that I can link to each page on the website?

When I go to add a page, I can’t choose one of these templates in order to convert these templates into actual pages….

I’ve even tried copying and pasting, but it doesn’t work…

    Please help!!!

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to moderators and staff)

  • Hi there,

First of all, digging the aesthetic of your site. Nice work so far!

Can someone please help me make these templates into pages, so that I can link to each page on the website?

Before I can make a recommendation here I have a quick question about your site. I see you have a blog page set up (in this template) and manually created some initial blog posts. You plan to add more posts over time though, yes?

If so I’d first recommend that you create individual blog posts out of each of the ones in that template. You can create blog posts here: https://wordpress.com/posts/edwinzpoetry.wordpress.com

The way WordPress works, the site will manage all blog posts for you (existing ones and new ones you add) if you first create them as individual posts here. This allows you to display a “feed” of blog posts on a specific page, like your “Blog” page. Also it allows you to subdivide your blog by categories and tags, so you can offer filtered views of just specific blog posts.

    More info here: https://wordpress.com/support/posts/

Once you have the posts set up, let us know and we can then walk you through how to set up a general page template (one that has your header, background, footer, etc) but leave the middle section open so that template can be used to create the multiple pages you will need in your site.

    Thanks!

Okay, I’ve figured out a fix! I created new templates, then added those to new pages, and used code editor to move over the code, and updated all the links, and it seems to be working as intended now!

  • I can confirm that you’ve created pages and assigned your templates to those pages. Nicely done!

Over time a site can easily grow to have hundreds of posts, so I still recommend moving the posts you have on https://edwinzpoetry.wordpress.com/poems-posted-to-twitter/ to be individual blog posts set up here: https://wordpress.com/posts/edwinzpoetry.wordpress.com

This will allow you to do things like auto-publish to social media or offer a subscription signup so folks can get new posts delivered to their inbox and stay in touch that way.

We go into a few of the tools we offer to manage the creation of custom (and dynamic) feeds of blog posts that update themselves using the blog management tools already in WordPress

Hope that helps. Please let us know if you have any more questions.
