Temporarily disable reader subscriptions
-
Hi there!
Is there a way to temporarily turn off notifications to my subscribers?
I have been doing a “photo-of-the-day” thing, and over the past four months have placed over a hundred photos directly into a single page. Now I want to go back and convert each photo into a separate post, so that people can share/comment on them individually.
However, every time I switch a photo over to a post wordpress sends out a new post notification to my subscribers. I don’t want to overwhelm them with over a hundred entries in such a short time, but I can’t figure out where to turn off these notifications.
Is there a way to turn them off? If so, where?
Thanks!

(Right now I have lumped most of them into a single post on my Photo-of-the-Day tab, but I plan to separate them all over the next few days.)The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

You could write a post advising people that you will be posting a lot in the next few days and that they should temporarily either unsubscribe (danger there that they wouldn’t re-subscribe) or change their subscription option to “never” deliver the subscription via email — if they’re wp.com users, that’s an option available to them from “Manage my subscriptions” in their account settings.
The other option is to spread this task out over several weeks by setting each post to go out at a specific time & day. That way you could get all of the work done in a few days, but the posts could be staggered without your having to do it manually.
Someone else may have other suggestions.

Thanks for your reply.
“…setting each post to go out at a specific time & day.” That’s cool. How do I do that?

In the “Publish” area of your posting page, click “edit” next to “Publish immediately” and pick a date and time. It can also be handy if you’re going to be very busy (or on holiday for a few weeks) and you want to schedule your posts in advance.

Very groovy. I will check that out!
So no temporary disabling of post notifications? That’s a bummer! That would be a good feature to avoid spammer your subscribers with mundane / house-keeping posts.

As far as I know, there is no way of doing that. It is something that the subscriber has options for, not the blog, which makes sense. And maybe some people would love to get all those little house-keeping posts! :-)
Post-dating posts may help keep you from feeling that you are suddenly spamming your readers, though.

Actually, a while back, I tested a way to publish a post without notifying email subscribers:

That “make blog private” seems to have done the trick fabulously! Wow. No post notifications to my test email address as long as the site was set to private.
WP should make this method official!
Thanks mmadfan & airodyssey for all your help.
Cheers, Karyn
