This cannot be done. Once a follower subscribers, they will receive every post unless they unsubscribe.

Ouch! I’m receiving negative feedback about not having enough options, and, therefore, people are reluctant to subscribe at all. Is this something WordPress is working on?

What sort of options are they concerned about? They can access their subscription settings at any time to unsubscribe or switch between daily or weekly emails.
