temporary blog name
-
I currently have purchased my private domain name through WordPress.com. However, I want to build a new theme look and when it’s ready transfer the contents of the old blog over to the new one, but keep the private domain name. What should I name the temporary new blog as I’m building it? Does it matter?
The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

Howdy,
If you’d like to create a second blog as a “sandbox” while building your site, you can use any name you’d like.
When you’re finished, you can export and import all of the posts and pages on the sandbox into your actual site. With widgets and theme settings, etc, you’ll have to reset those manually, but that can be done relatively quickly once you have the settings as you want them on the sandbox!
Please let me know if you have any other questions or need anything else. Thanks for using WordPress.com!

So…the “sandbox” is where I build the new site with a new theme look and I will be able to import my old posts from my existing site that is now live, am I understanding that correctly?
Is there a help page you can direct me to for importing the existing site?

Hello again: So I set up a new temporary blog here: http://janetadele.wordpress.com/ and I am beginning to set it up but I do have a follow up question on what we discussed doing above.
Once I export content from janetbuttenwieser.com and import it into the temp. blog that will then be complete visually, I am going to want to drop the temp. blog name and go back to my primary domain name. How do I do that and is that going to cause any broken link problems or anything else I should be aware of?
Thank you in advance.

Once you’re ready with the new site to take on the new name, ping me and I’ll transfer the domain over for you.
We keep the same permalink structure, so links should continue to work just fine.
Hope you had a good weekend and thanks for using WordPress.com!

Hi There: So I’m following up with you on the export/import that you described above. I followed the steps to export posts and comments content from http://janetbuttenwieser.com and import it into http://janetadele.wordpress.com/
I noticed that a .txt file went into my media library when I did the import; then it said it was processing and a day later I received an email saying that the import was successful. But nothing seems to have happened….there is no where I can see that the old posts are now available in my temp blog. The few that are there I put in manually.
I don’t want to pay the fee to have someone do this…it seems pretty straightforward but I tired it twice and no luck. Can you advise?
-
Hi Janet,
I processed the import/export for you and it appears to have been successful to me, though there are a few duplicates from the posts you manually copied over.
Did everything appear to transfer over correctly for you?
-
Thank you…yes, everything look great. For the future, was there something that I did wrong or was it just a delayed kind of thing?
-
The short answer is I’m not sure. Before diving in to debug, I ran the export/import again to investigate when it worked. It might have been an error on your part or a hiccup elsewhere.
Please let me know if you need anything else!

Hi there: I have my new temporary site finished and want to ask your help in getting my primary domain transferred over to it (see thread above). Let me know if I need to do anything on my end.
The new site is janetadele.wordpress.com/ and I need the site name to be my current one: janetbuttenwieser.com.
Thank you!
-
I’ve moved over your domain, so you should be all set there. Would you like me to migrate your subscribers over as well to the new site?
-
Umm, I think you did it the wrong way. Please don’t tell me that everything I built is lost….the janetadele.wordpress.com was the new site design. But the address should be janetbuttenwieser.com
-
Hi,
You may need to empty your browser’s cache. http://janetbuttenwieser.com is directing me to site built at janetadele.wordpress.com.
If you visit http://janetadele.wordpress.com, it’ll redirect you to http://janetbuttenwieser.com (to avoid having the same URL have the same website, which wouldn’t be good for SEO), so if your cache has the old site for your domain, it may display it incorrectly.
This will resolve itself in a couple of hours typically, but clearing the cache will help to speed things up.
Cheers!
-
Okay thanks. I did clear my cache but I’ll wait a few hours and check again. If it’s set up correctly, then yes please go ahead and migrate any subscribers. Sorry for the panic.
-
I completely understood :-). You should be all set, but please do let me know if things aren’t looking right to you soon.

Thanks so much. So…my last question is, on my account…I’d like to have just the current new one in my account, hopefully with the domain name above it. If I delete the old one (the one at the top) so there’s no confusion, will that push the name to show up on the new one? Here’s a link to a screen shot below so you can see what I mean. I tend to think there’s a way for me to do that in Dashboard > My Blogs but it doesn’t seem intuitive to me. Thanks.

Howdy,
The title that is displayed there is the site title as defined in Settings->General for the site ( https://janetadele.wordpress.com/wp-admin/options-general.php ).
You can delete the other site if you wish. Please note that once a site is deleted it can’t be undone and the WordPress.com address (http://janetbuttenwieser.wordpress.com/) can’t be reused.
You can delete the site via Tools->Delete Site at http://janetbuttenwieser.wordpress.com/wp-admin/
Cheers!
