temporary domain name with premium?

I am moving my site from a hosting platform to a self-hosted site on WordPress.com. I need a few months to build my WordPress.com site before I transfer over the domain name. However, when I go to upgrade my plan to premium, it requires me to have a custom domain name. Can I choose to keep it as http://www.sitename.wordpress.com (with premium) and then transfer my domain name when my site is ready? Any advice/clarification/help would be appreciated!
