test blog: copy existing?
-
It would be simply perfect if I could copy my existing blog, giving it a different name, and then play around with that as a test.
What’s the nearest thing to this that I can do?
(Please!)The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

Every blogger needs a test blog to try out themes and widgets, etc. in. Make it a private mirror blog of your primary blog and it becomes very useful as well as being a backup blog you import content into on a regular basis. To change blog visibility go to > Settings > Reading. here http://en.support.wordpress.com/settings/privacy-settings/ scroll down to Creating a mirror blog http://onecoolsitebloggingtips.com/2010/05/19/how-to-select-a-wordpress-com-theme-part-1/

Hmm … While I do indeed thank you, timethief, I was not able to replicate the site under a different name.
I did indeed get the same template, but there’s no content. No posts, or pages, or widgets in the sidebar.
:-(
Sighh … I suppose it’s me. Usually is. -
Sorry! – as usual, not making myself clear.
Everything appears in the dashboard; but when I write a new post and preview it, it shows me a brand new site without any ‘published’ content. -
1. You register a new blog. http://en.support.wordpress.com/register-a-blog/
2. You export content out of the first blog in an XML file onto your desktop.
3. You then import the XML export file into the new blog you registered.

That’s all there is to this. -
Once you’ve created the test site, you can simply export the content from your primary site and then import it to your test site. Here’s how:
http://en.support.wordpress.com/export/
http://en.support.wordpress.com/import/This will work for any basic blog, but if you have any custom upgrades (premium theme, custom design) you will not be able to use those on your test blog unless you purchase those upgrades for the test blog as well.

Ah! – that solves that. I have indeed purchased custom design for my blog. And now you tell me that I must continue purchasing it every time I ‘register’ another blog. How very … restrictive for a person living on the age pension.
So much for the logical idea of mirror image to best trial changes.
Thank you, justjennifer! -
but if you have any custom upgrades (premium theme, custom design) you will not be able to use those on your test blog unless you purchase those upgrades for the test blog as well.
Aha! Righty oh.
@margaretrosestringer
That’s what the preview function is for.I’m not sure if the Custom Design upgrade is for me. Can I try before I buy?
Yes! If you haven’t purchased the upgrade yet, go to Appearance → Customize, click the Custom Design menu link, and click the Try Now button. The CSS panel has an editor where you can paste CSS code and preview the changes in the live preview area on the left. The CSS changes you try before purchasing the upgrade will only be visible to you, so you can test and edit to your heart’s content.
If you’d like to preview your custom colors, fonts, or CSS with a different theme, but without changing the appearance of your live blog, you can use the Live Preview link below any theme on the Appearance → Themes page in your blog dashboard. http://en.support.wordpress.com/custom-design/#frequently-asked-questions

You’re welcome. Upgrades on WordPress.com are per blog, not per user.
FWIW, you should be able to preview your Custom Design changes before making them permanent by using the Customizer on your original site. No extra charge!
