test5: Can't stay logged in (original message, sans link)
-
I’m attempting to start up a blog using the open source web browser NetSurf, which has no support for Javascript.
I chose WordPress.com because it seemed simple and non-Javascript-dependent from the outside, as opposed to Blogger which is big, slow and bloated. I wasn’t expecting everything to work perfectly, but I was at least expecting to get as far as the administration panel!
I got through the sign-up process OK, and managed to create a blog, but now I find myself unable to do anything with it. Clicking on almost any link on the front page while logged in, such as the ‘admin dashboard’ one, results in me being instantly logged out – of the whole site, regardless of whether “stay signed in” is ticked or not – and confronted with a pointless ‘login’ page, with a redirect parameter suffixed onto the URL, and “swirlythingy” already entered in the username box. This login page does not work, in that clicking “Login” just reloads the page and asks me for my password again.
Can WordPress be fixed to work without Javascript? Does anyone know of any workarounds? Is there a Javascript-less mobile version like Twitter’s? Is my problem nothing to do with Javascript and I’m barking up the wrong tree?
The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

Have you tried clearing your browser’s cache and cookies according to the instructions found on this page? http://en.support.wordpress.com/browser-issues/
Repeatedly posting in the forums in the manner you have done will get you marked as a spammer and banned. And then you won’t be able to get any help at all.
-
You have to make sure that you have cookies enabled in your browser. That is how wordpress keeps track of you and whether you are logged in or logged out.
-
Also, you might think of using a javascript enabled browser for working with wordpress only since you are going to find that certain stuff is going to be way short of the possibilities this platform offers.
Just a suggestion.
-
Ok, one more “also.” I don’t think that wordpress.com even checks for compatibility with the netsurf browser since it has an absolutely minuscule share of the browser market (almost too small to even measure).
-
I have tried deleting cookies, but it didn’t solve the problem (and NetSurf doesn’t have a cache).
I don’t think it’s NetSurf specific, just Javascript dependency in general. In theory, one should be able to replicate it using the NoScript addon for Firefox.
Regarding the other threads: Could someone with authority please delete all the zombie ‘admin’ threads and everything started by me except this one? I thought I might be able to do it myself, but I can’t find an option. Ta. After that, please could you try and fix the bug? I think it’s something to do with using HTML tags…

WordPress backend has to be excluded from noscript or you will have virtually nothing that will work in the dashboard. WordPress uses javascript. The entire editor is written in javascript. With javascript enabled you aren’t going to be using wordpress.
-
Last sentence should be “WithOUT javascript enabled you aren’t going to be using wordpress.”
-
I can’t speak for the editor, I haven’t managed to get that far yet!
I’ve just remembered some further details: I DID manage to get to the dashboard BEFORE I signed up for a blog (long story short, apparently when I signed up for Gravatar I got a WordPress account as well), and it all seemed pretty functional. The problem only started AFTER I registered the domain swirlythingy.wordpress.com. After that, all dashboard links were changed to point beneath that, and clicking on any of them resulted in me being logged out and unable to get back in from the form provided (although the strip at the top of the wordpress.com homepage still works). Sadly, it seems the original wordpress.com/wp-admin URL has stopped working, with the same symptoms, as well.
Is this normal behaviour? Does anyone else have to re-enter their password every time they load a page beneath wp-admin, or is it just me? If it’s just me, it doesn’t sound like an intentional feature – but I’m still at a loss as to how Javascript may be involved…

opinion//My suggestion, use a browser that works with WordPress.com. As tsp mentioned above, the browser you’ve chosen to use is going to prevent you from using the site to the fullest./opinion http://browsehappy.com/
If you are really determined to go bare bones, you could try using m.wordpress.com, the “feature” phone mobile site, or post by email. http://en.support.wordpress.com/post-by-email/
-
You. Have. Got. To. Have. Javascript.
Get Firefox. If you are paranoid about security, then get the noscrpt add-on, but you will HAVE to whitelist wordpress.com in noscript.

Also see this thread:
https://en.forums.wordpress.com/topic/help-every-time-i-post-in-the-forum-this-happens?replies=5Note that I have spammed your other “comments” connected with this issue.

No need to be like that, I did ask for them to be deleted above!
m.wordpress.com sounded promising, and I’ve just given it a look by analogy with m.twitter.com, which has mostly worked well for me. Sadly, while Twitter’s mobile site is more or less a completely functional clone of the main site with fewer bells and whistles (that is, in addition to all its various mobile apps), WordPress’s sadly is not. In fact, reading justjennifer’s support link, it seems posting by email actually offers MORE flexibility! But there’s no capability in either to edit or delete anything, without going through the completely inaccessible dashboard (which, by the way, I was very surprised to find there wasn’t a proper mobile version of).
So I’m afraid you’ve lost my custom. I mean, there’s phpBB for forums and that manages quite well enough without being overrun with Javascript, surely there must be a blog equivalent somewhere? I’ll delete the blog as soon as I can gain access to a browser with Javascript (oh, yes, blog deletion apparently goes through the dashboard as well) and try another provider. This time I think I might be sensible enough to ask before signing up…

So I’m afraid you’ve lost my custom.
The forums here are not meant to be for “test, test, test” so that is why your “test” comments were spammed. No one wants to scroll through nonsense! Keep in mind, while you are being harsh, that most of the answers provided here are made by volunteers, and though I am a moderator, I’m also a volunteer.
Also, you should keep in mind that as personalized and prompt the answers in these forums are, the wp.com service is offered for free.
While wp.com may not be for you, I wish you the best in your future blogging choices.

There are a ton of apps wordpress has created for various mobile platforms. See here.
-
Mobile apps are great; looking forward to start using the android one in a couple of weeks.
Regardless m.wordpress.com is primarily meant for those who cannot use the other mobile apps offered (like me on my feature phone) and is bare bone but accessible and functional. http://en.support.wordpress.com/on-your-mobile/
@swirlythingy You can contact Support when they return on Monday to delete your site for you. You might also want to ask them about your problems using NetSurf with WordPress.com; most likely they’ll advise using a browser that works with the site. Best of luck with your efforts.

Answer: Always be aware that you are posting to a public forum, and that forum topics may only be deleted if they represent a valid security or personal safety concern. reference source
