Hi there!
Can you give us more information about what end result you’re looking for by using categories or tags on your testimonials? Once we have that information, we’ll be better able to advise.
Thanks!

Hello! Thanks a lot for contacting.
We have a bunch of testmonials, and we would like to apply to them Categories or Tags so specific menus or pages may contain only a certain selection of the testimonials.
I believe that for “posts” this ideia is pretty clear, but since Testimonials are one of a kind within WordPress.com, I am not sure how our idea above could be implemented.BR

Hello again,
I noticed that it may be not clear why we are not using “Posts” instead of “Testimonails”. The current theme applied (Pique cafe) has a special feature to show random testimonials in the front page as a panel, and we would like to keep this feature in our website. If a “post page” panel is used, it seems that randomization of the content on the panel is not possible.BR

Hey there,

So it’s not possible to categorise testimonials.
For this you would need to create posts, and then categorise them if you wish to show them in certain places.
You may need to keep that testimonial panel in place.

Hello aleone89, thanks for the reply.
Would it be possible to embed a testimonial in a post, then categorize or apply a tag to the post? This idea occurred to me. However, I have no ideia how does “embedded” content work.BR

I think technically you could do this, using one of the following options:
- https://en.support.wordpress.com/wordpress-editor/blocks/blog-posts-block/
- https://wordpress.com/support/testimonials/#testimonial-shortcode
- https://wordpress.com/support/display-posts-shortcode/
The two first options are general “show blog posts” options, but they can be set to explicitly show only testimonials, and set the number of items that are displayed. You may find the Blog Posts block slightly easier as you can select the item you want to show by title; the Query Loop block has a ‘keyword’ function which isn’t quite the same.
Theoretically you could use the keyword function in the Query Loop block (it’s in the settings, under Filters) to also act as some kind of categorisation for the testimonials, but it tends to be a little more flexible so I’m not sure it would achieve what you want exactly. It might be worth testing this by ensuring that each testimonial has a unique word in the title or body of the testimonial per ‘category’, and using that as your keyword/categorisation.
The third option is the testimonial shortcode – it’s a little more restricted in how it appears, but it does have a “random” function!
Finally, the display posts shortcode is similar to the testimonial shortcode. It’s kind of half-way between the blocks and the testimonial shortcode, because you can choose what “type” of post you want it to show (including testimonials), and choose which item to display based on its ID number. There is also a section at the base of the guide telling you where you can find the ID number of your post/page/testimonial.

Hello 95percentghost,
thanks for the reply.I have thought about embedding a whole testimonal in a post, but the options you have showed seem very feasible and may achieve our aim, which is to show a page or a menu with previously selected testimonials — but we want to keep the random testimonal panel of our current theme (only if you have a different approach to achieve an equivalent effect).
By the options, it seems that the key is how the “categorization” is done — so, each of the options may be tested. I will check it asap, but our aim is to have this kind of action as much automated as possible.

Thank you. Let us know what you find and what further questions you have about that method. We’ll be glad to help where we can, especially if it helps others who are trying to achieve something similar. Kudos to you for having so many testimonials to work with!

Hello supernovia
Thanks a lot for all the support. I have been trying 95percentghost’s options, but are a lot of outcomes possible.
The best option seems to use the Query block, since it allows the use of a Filter, which makes “automation” possible as new testimonials are included. However, blog posts have a better solution aestheticcally… it is possible to reproduce it in Query block?
Also, it is possible to use Query Block in Sidebar Widgets?

Hi there,

Since you mentioned aesthetics, One option that you may want to consider is the Post Carousel Block, which will take your testimonials and display them one at a time as a “slideshow” for lack of a better word.
To see it in action I recommend checking out our recent recording on Custom Blog pages, where we feature this block in our first demo.
In the demo you will note that we’re showing blog posts (with images) but there are block settings to show text only, as well as to show testimonials instead of blog posts. Similar to the other blocks you mention this will automatically update itself as you add more testimonials.
Also, it is possible to use Query Block in Sidebar Widgets?
I’ve tested this and it’s not possible, primarily because there is not enough room in the sidebar to show that kind of content. Instead I would recommend adding them to a page called “Tutorials” which you could also add to your homepage layout or your site menu.
Hope that helps. Please let us know if you have any more questions.

Hello staff-totoro,
Thanks a lot for recommending the youtube webinar. I’ve watched it and it was nice and very clarifying. The Post Caroussel is not a bad ideia, but it does not have filter options for testimonials rather than “author”.
The feature that “Blog Posts” has is the “show media behind,” what we found very nice, since all of our testimonials have feature images. Nevertheless, “Blog Posts” does not have a function to filter based on “Keywords.”
For the Query Block in sidebar, thanks for the feedback!
BR and thanks for the prompt responses!

Hello all,
I think I have not mentioned that I am still a starter in WP.com, but I found that “Cover” Blocks seems to solve my issue of “copying” the ‘blog post’ pattern. Right now working on it.
Thanks again and I will report back.BR

Dear all,
The Query block has worked as a charm for the objective to select only certain testimonials to appear in a page or on a block. The result allows automatic updates as news testimonials are added (only need to be careful about keywords), which was my main worry when looking for a solution. Kudos to 95percentghost for the idea and staff-totoro for providing the nice tutorial.
