Testimonials logic

    Per a Happiness Engineer,

there is a CSS code breaking the layout and changing the testimonials order

Can someone review this CSS and let me know. I am trying to make sense of the way the two testimonials on the Front Page display as well as the page under Our Work – testimonials. This I believe is publish date.

    I have three testimonials:
    Gretchen, Kelsey and Dave

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

  • Hi @whitebarndesignlp!

I can see why you were confused, the ordering of these is kind of unique :)

The testimonials are pulled into the page in the usual order, which is newest first. Then, when the theme styles them, it lays out the grid.

This particular theme builds fills it’s grid from right to left and top to bottom, so you get a grid of testimonials kind of like this:

    ____________
    | | |
    | 2 | 1 |
    |_____|_____|
    | | |
    | 4 | 3 |
    |_____|_____|
    | | |
    | 6 | 5 |
    |_____|_____|
    | | |
    | 8 | 7 |
    |_____|_____|

(I hope that comes out okay!)

Theoretically, it would probably be possible for you to write some CSS to reposition them in a different order – but I wouldn’t recommend it, as you’d be writing very specific, detailed styles to override the inline positioning.

This very helpful, thank you. Do you know then why on Front Page/ Home where there are the testimonials it is putting the 2nd and 3rd. I want those two there as they are but curious why it is doing that for future updates.

Also I have now added a 4th testimonial and it is a video but it pushed down and there is a lot of white space now underneath on the front page. Thanks for any assistance in advance.

The theme is showing the two most recent testimonials. The newest (most recent) on the right, and the second newest on the right.

Also I have now added a 4th testimonial and it is a video but it pushed down and there is a lot of white space now underneath on the front page.

    I see the problem there.

The video you’ve embedded is tall – 735px tall to be exact. When the page loads, the theme looks at the testimonial, sees something that tall and sets the height of the testimonial section manually.

Then the video gets scaled down to fit inside the smaller box, but the calculation has already been made.

Instead of using a basic embed like you’ve done (pasting in the URL), try using a YouTube shortcode and setting the height manually, like this:

    [youtube https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hK9bRMYFuW4&w=400]

That should prevent the theme from getting mixed up on the height :)
