testing a migration

I’m not ready to sign up for a business plan until I can see how my current site nutritionheretic.com looks on WordPress.com. It is currently built on WordPress.org, but I’m not happy with how the theme keeps breaking or otherwise looking ridiculous on mobile or taking forever to load. I’m really hoping that moving the site won’t be jumping from the frying pan into the fire. If I migrate from the current site, will I lose the content/setup from the self-hosted site?

The site I need help with is nutritionheretic.wordpress.com.

  • Hi there,

It is possible to migrate an exact copy of your current site to us, so it would appear to be the same as it is now, with no outward changes. The only change would be that it is hosted on WordPress.com and not with Momwebs hosting.

To migrate an exact copy of your site you can upgrade to the Business plan, then follow the steps here: https://wordpress.com/support/moving-from-self-hosted-wordpress-to-wordpress-com/#option-1-migrate-from-self-hosted

Hope that helps. Please let us know if you have any more questions.

Thanks for the reply! I guess the only other question I would have would be what potential drawbacks would I have by moving to WP.com. I’ve had an account forever, but haven’t really considered it a viable contender in the past because of limitations. Those seem to be gone, but some people have warned me that at any time WP.com could consider anyone’s content inappropriate or otherwise problematic and remove the site completely. Is that a thing? There’s a lot of weird censorship happening these days and I don’t want to have to deal with some arbitrary removal of my website.

While we now allow plugins and custom themes on WordPress.com, we’re still a managed host. That means we do restrict certain things. You cannot directly modify core WordPress files, for example, and you’ll have fewer server configuration options than you’d have with a non-managed host. This also means that certain plugins won’t work here, because they conflict with the specific hosting setup we use:

    https://wordpress.com/support/incompatible-plugins/

On the other hand, we take care of all software updates and maintenance for you, security, spam protection, malware scanning and backups are included, so you don’t need to pay extra for premium plugins to get those services, and our Business Plan includes 24/7 support for the WordPress software itself – most hosts only provide support for your hosting account, not for software issues on your site.

some people have warned me that at any time WP.com could consider anyone’s content inappropriate or otherwise problematic and remove the site completely. Is that a thing?

When you created your account with us, you agreed to our terms of service, and those terms include what types of content we don’t allow on WordPress.com. But that’s not unique to us – all hosting providers, including your current one, have a terms of service, and reserve the right to terminate your service should you use your site in a way that violates that.

You can find a detailed overview of what we don’t allow on WordPress.com here:

    https://wordpress.com/support/user-guidelines/

We only suspend sites that violate our terms of service and user guidelines. We don’t suspend a site simply because we disagree with the content on it.

Hmmm…. well I have a site about chicken — roosters in particular — that is a play on words. Nothing rude or pornographic, but uses a word that in the US is often considered naughty. It hasn’t been rejected by NameCheap, so I’m gonna assume it would be OK with WP.com too. Is that a reasonable assumption?

Another consideration I forgot about is that one of the sites I would want to move was built on Divi Theme (ourpooches.com), what would be the right way to move it over? Do I have to disable the theme first or do something fancy to move it over?

  • If it’s just the word, that’s fine. The overall content cannot violate our terms of service https://wordpress.com/tos/ and user guidelines https://wordpress.com/support/user-guidelines/ however.

To use a third-party theme here, like Divi, you’ll need a paid Business or eCommerce plan: https://wordpress.com/support/themes/uploading-setting-up-custom-themes/

With that said, we do have hundreds of themes available, no paid plan required: https://wordpress.com/themes

OK. I plan on having a business plan for each site I want to move & already own a Divi license. I just want to make sure it won’t be a headache to move particularly due to this theme (which I hate, but don’t feel like recreating the entire site). The instructions that are linked out to in the responses above sound good, but it remains to be seen how simple the actual move will be.

I’m hiring a new web designer who uses Elementor to build sites. I just can’t tell if it’s compatible with WP.com as well. Maybe the better question to ask is: If a theme or plugin is compatible with WP.org, would it also be compatible with WP.com business plan?

  • You can also use Elementor here.

We support all themes you can find for WordPress.org, and almost all plugins: https://wordpress.com/support/incompatible-plugins/

To move your sites over, just follow the steps at https://wordpress.com/support/moving-from-self-hosted-wordpress-to-wordpress-com/ :)
