testing a new theme

  I already have a wordpress site but want to test out a new theme without going live. Can I set up a dummy site to play with different themes and then transfer it to my real site when I’m happy with it?

  Hi there,

  A simpler option may be to “preview” your site with a new theme:

  Themes

  But to answer your question:
  Yes, you can set up a dummy site to play with different themes, of course! You can even import your current site’s posts and pages so you have an accurate representation of your content on the dummy site.

  However, WordPress.com does not currently offer a way to transfer over site settings and theme options, so once you have the dummy site set up the way you like it, you will have to copy the options manually on your main site. @kokkieh offers a good technique for accomplishing this in this thread.:

  When I’ve had to do this in the past I’d open the two sites side by side in separate browser windows, and then work through the Customizer and Settings pages duplicating everything from the one site to the other.

  So while you can’t duplicate theme settings with one click, you can certainly use the completed dummy site as a guide.
