Text changes color

    Hello,

On my homepage, the “Show Reel” project up top sometimes shows it’s featured image’s text in white, and other times in black. Most often, it appears as black on a computer, but then as white on a mobile phone.
I’d like for it to constantly remain white, as it looks best with its dark grey background… Anyone has any idea how to solve this?

    Thank you!

It looks like your theme’s CSS has the colors set that way – where the link is a gray until you hover over it when it changes to white.

In order to change behavior that you would need access to the Custom CSS upgrade that’s part of WordPress.com Premium plans and above. You can compare the different plan options here:

    https://wordpress.com/pricing/

Since every theme is different, we would need to sort out the custom CSS needed for your theme. If you upgrade, let us know and we can figure out that code for you.

    I hope that clarifies things!

I don’t think that this theme in particular has the colors set this way… If you check their website (https://wordpress.com/theme/sketch), you can see in their demo that their text is constantly in white.
Do you still think the only solution would be to have access to the CSS?

  • Hi there,

On my homepage, the “Show Reel” project up top sometimes shows it’s featured image’s text in white, and other times in black. Most often, it appears as black on a computer, but then as white on a mobile phone.

I did not see this when I visit your site. On my computer, the text appears as white, as shown in my screenshot:

I’ve tried on several different browsers on my computer but do not see it in black text. Am I looking in the correct place? Can you share a screenshot of when you see it with black text? Does the issue appear only in Chrome? Or does it appear if you use a different browser like Firefox or Internet Explorer/Edge?

    Thanks for the additional info!

Yes, that is exactly how I’d like it to look!
In my google chrome browser the “Show Reel” text always looks dark grey. If you tell me how, I can add a screenshot of it here.

I tried opening it in a different browser and it looked white! Do you think its a chrome cache problem then?

  • Hi there,

It does sound like Chrome may be at issue here. If you visit your site in an “incognito window” instead of a standard browser window does the text appear white?

The incognito window will skip your cache, cookies, and extensions, so if it looks good there then as a first step I would recommend that you clear your cache and cookies based on the steps google recommends here: https://support.google.com/accounts/answer/32050

If that does not clear it up then it may be one of your Chrome extensions that is causing the issue, so we can look into that next.

If you tell me how, I can add a screenshot of it here.

To share a screenshot with us, you can upload it to the Media Library on your site, and then copy the image URL. You can see a video of how to do this here: https://d.pr/v/Fcnerp

Once you have the image URL just paste it into your reply and we will be able to see your screenshot, thanks!

When using an incognito window, the text does appear as white. After removing most of my chrome extensions and deleting the cached images and cookies, the issue seems resolved! Here’s the screenshot of how it looked before anyway (thank you!)

I’m still wondering, will this issue still show to other people? Like how csonnek replied above, it seemed like it was happening to them.

  • I’m still wondering, will this issue still show to other people?

Hmm, I do see what you described when opening your site with Chrome. Do you still see the wrong colors, or has everything stayed as it should after disabling the extensions?
If it did stop, which extensions did you disable?

It stopped only for a very short time, after clicking some projects it went back to displaying the text as black…
Every time I clear cache and cookies it displays as white. Then, when I click on a project for example, and go back to the homepage, it shows as black again.
If I visit the website with an incognito window, it remains constantly white, no matter what projects I open.

    Hello,

I think its issue with CSS with :visited property. Don’t know how its applied to link but your showreel link turns black / gray when you visit the linked page. Until that it remains white.

I found that a:visited set globally as gray color which turning color.

    a:visited{color:#f68060}

You need to change that value if its in theme option or have to write custom css if that possible with your color plan or check with theme author for same.

  • Smart find, @rcreators! And while we wouldn’t want that color to globally be white, we do want the visited color in the slider to stay white. I’ve filed an issue for that here:
    https://github.com/Automattic/themes/issues/4078

Also, it turns out this is only happening if the custom color’s background is set to white, so @margaridaroxo, if you’d like to fix it on your site until the theme itself is taken care of, you can go back to Customize > Colors and use the default pale grey background.
