Text excerpt bug in Query Loop

  • Unknown's avatar

    Dear all,

I have noticed a strange response when using the Query Loop block in the Pique theme.

I am using the Query Loop block to show systematically selected testimonial links in specific pages. This is a solution to the thread I have opened before:

    https://wordpress.com/forums/topic/testimonials-50/

Nevertheless, when I use the “Text Excerpt” block within the Cover block in Query Loop, in the edition mode it seems ok: the excerpt appears with ellipsis and a field with a “Add read more link…” also appears.

However, recently the excerpt contains an extra text that has no function at all after I update the page. This is showed below.

At first I thought it was a mistake from me, but I cannot get rid of it by any means.
Could you assist me on this hopefully?

    BR

Hi, is there anyone who could check this issue?

    Hi there!

Are you still seeing the same thing on your site? I visited the link, and here’s a screenshot of what I see:

As you can see, the additional text from your screenshot isn’t showing up on my end.

Please check and let us know if you’re still seeing this.

    Dear aisajib,

    Thanks for your reply.

Unfortunately, you were not able to see, or fail to do so, that the text I have pointed out is still in the “post excerpt” block. Please check it again carefully.

The exact content of the text excerpt may be different because I have updated the website with new testimonials.

Looking forward for new and useful insights.

    BR

  • Hey there,

    Many thanks for reaching out.

I wouldn’t see this is a bug, but instead perhaps a quirk of the loop block. It looks like the loop block is picking up the Read More block content.

It’s possible to override this by filling in the excerpt field in the Testimonial:

    I hope this helps.

    Hi aleone89,

Thanks for your reply and for the workaround. I will try this later.

Nevertheless, I think it can be see as a bug because of the following:

    • when set at first in the backend, the “text excerpt” block does not show the extra text — maybe a quirk from the “read more” block as you pointed out
    • after the page with the “query loop” is updated, the extra text appears both in frontend and backend. How come?

The reason for using the “read more” block is due to the Testimonial feature of the theme, which creates a panel in the main page.

    BR

  • I can say Excerpts and Read More can get a little tricky, and would typically recommend using one or the other rather than both, if you can.

    That said,

However, recently the excerpt contains an extra text that has no function at all after I update the page. This is showed below.

It sounds like this used to work one way, and it recently changed. Am I understanding that correctly?

Between that and your arguments, I wonder if there is a bug here.

Would you be willing to test to see if setting a manual excerpt for the content changes anything?

    Hi supernovia

Thanks for reaching the topic and for replying. Sorry for my late reply.

It sounds like this used to work one way, and it recently changed. Am I understanding that correctly?

I am actually not sure now, but I’m sure in the Backend it was fine at some moment. Maybe this problem was already there, but we just have noticed it later — our main aim was to get a method to sort out the testimonials. We could say that the “text preview” is a plus we wanted to keep.

Would you be willing to test to see if setting a manual excerpt for the content changes anything?

Ok, I have done some tests and I will try my best to resume the results below.

The workaround done by aleone89 works well to avoid the extra text with no links in the Query Loop result panel, but it makes it necessary to add mannually Excerpts in every testimonial.

The “more” block is still needed because the theme has a panel in home page that exhibits two random testimonials and the text until the “more” block. If I do not use it, the panel shows the whole Testimonial content (including figures). By some reason, the front page panel does not make use of the Excerpt item of the Testimonial page.

Nevertheless, when trying some different stuff, I think we may have found a solution (?).

I have noticed that when I set a amount of 25 words in the “Post Excerpt” block it works well in the Query Loop result (see backend image below). The previous configuration was 55 words (next image below).

Note the “Read more” within the text excerpt in the lower printscreen.

What do you guys think of it?

Looking forward to you reply. BR.

Only adding that the “Post Excerpt” block is within the “Cover” block. Not sure, but maybe this interaction creates the effect showed above.

  • Thanks for this @jiyota – I did notice you’re using a reusable block. I’m wondering whether that’s affecting things.

Are you using this same block elsewhere on the site, and is it having the same issue consistently?

    Hello, supernovia

Thanks a lot for the support.

Are you using this same block elsewhere on the site, and is it having the same issue consistently?

Ans. 1: I am using the block at various parts of the site, but sometimes I undo the link for some instances to tweak little thing.

Ans.2: The issue is consistent. In other words, if I use the “excerpt” block in the conditions cited beforehand, it will create the undesirable “read more+title” text.

I did notice you’re using a reusable block. I’m wondering whether that’s affecting things.

Ans. 3: I do not think so, because the issue is consistent even if a reusable block is used.

BR and looking forward to your reply.

Ans. 3: I do not think so, because the issue is consistent even if a reusable block is *not* used.
