Text for link
-
I used to create links by highlighting content words in my post and clicking to insert a description string of words in the link editor along with the link, e.g. for the post content words “caking baking” I would highlight those 2 words, click the link editor, add the Wikipdea link and describe the link as: Great Wikipedia discussion on cake baking. But something has changed now and whatever my content text reads that I highlight for a link description are the only words that are allowed to create the link. So now, the content words, “cake baking” can only have a link with the description “cake baking” and no reference to Wikipedia and if I change the description of the link, it changes the content of my post to match. Is this a glitch. Please help me describe my link properly without changing the published content of my blog post.
The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

Hi Leslie,
That title field (where you could previously add text) was removed from the open source WordPress software that’s used at WordPress.com. When the open source software is changed, WordPress.com automatically gets those changes.
You can read the full discussion on why this was removed from WordPress here:
https://core.trac.wordpress.org/ticket/32095
If you’d like a workaround to add a title to your link, I’d recommend using the HTML code described in this forum post:

Hi there,
It definitely isn’t a glitch. I tried this on my site and have the same problem. I am not sure if they feature has been removed. But I figured out how to get that description text working. In the HTML editor add a span tag to link and you can get the alternate text to show up when the mouse is hovered on the link.e.g.
testing a<span title="I am hovering over the text"> <a href="http://simplysaru.com">link</a></span> post. The above code will produce this ” testing a<span title=”I am hovering over the text”> link</span> post.”. Ideally the text “I am hovering over the text” should pop over when the mouse hovers over the link. A screenshot of how it looks when I tried it is here.
This might be a tedious workaround if your post has a lot of links, but something you can try. I will let others suggest if they have any better options.

Sorry Rachel,
Didn’t refresh the post before posting the reply. I’ve been too engrossed with my reply I guess. Your suggestion looks easier than mine. Thanks for the tip. -
Thank you for the information but, wow! It took me literally hours to go in to edit in the text mode for each link using the specified html code, inserting the link, the hover text, the non hover text…and then going back into the link editor to check the box for opening in a new window. Do folks know that linked text can literally require an abbreviated sponsor disclosure? Plus, of course, what is described for a link is not always what you want to burden the post with because it can completely stop the flow of a well-written piece. And that is NOT about SEO at all. I see that wordpress.org folks have created new tools to easily utilize the former feature so I’m REALLY hoping that wordpress.com will make us something soon to use to revert back to a proper text link editor. You guys are great so hoping you’ll hear the call. I’m only able to produce a blog during the midnight hours so I can see this is going to mean many more late-night hours for me — if I can keep up the html writing to adjust. Please come to the rescue! Best regards.
