text inside a box

Using the Vigilance template, is it possible to put boxed text into the post? Not into the Sidebar, but in the body of the post.

I’m not sure what you mean, but you could us:
blockquote
text goes here
)
or if you want to use source code:
[sourcecode language='css']
your code here
[/sourcecode]
see this post:http://support.wordpress.com/code/

I would like to be able to have a sort of side-bar bit of information inside a box, placed inside the text. I do not mean that Quote Box. I mean a box with information that is not part of the story, but tangentially mentioned — a sidebar.
What I want is to have that sidebar text clearly and distinctly separate from the rest of the text so that if the reader wants to, he can read what’s in it and then jump back to where he left off reading.

I am only now beginning to pick up a few things about html, like the <p></p>
for skipping a line or the “Select all and then to go Format and click ”paragraph.“LORNAKISMET

With the Sandbox theme you can do “asides” although I would have to hunt for a while to find the procedure.
Other than the aside with sandbox, the only think I can think of is to actually make an image with the text in it. A say 200px wide by whatever image with the background color of your choice and then you write the text in it in the image editing program.

Here is a box outlined with a thin grey line,
a blue background, #99ccff; but you can change the color number
and several paragraphs. Just type in however many paragraphs you like.
The paragraphs are inset by 1em on all sides, but you can adjust how much by changing one, two, three, or all four to .5m for narrower or 1.5em for wider.You must be in the HTML editor to paste this code.
<div style="border:1px solid #aaaaaa;padding-left:1em;padding-right:1em;padding-top:1em;padding-left:1em;padding-bottom:1em;background-color:#99ccff;">PARAGRAPH_TEXT PARAGRAPH_TEXT PARAGRAPH_TEXT</div> -
Dear 1Tess: I can see that in fact you gave me a Golden Key to solve my problem, but you know what? I am not that far along with HTML to understand what it is that I am supposed to do with it. I suppose I could make a dummy post and fiddle with what you have given me here……
And that scroller there: Is that written into the code? It never occurred to me that I would need a horizontally scrolling bar because I want just small chunks of text.
I will experiment with what SacredPath and you, Tess, gave me. For right now, I know exactly how to do it the way Sacred Path said, but your way looks like it could end up looking very elegant and not an add on.

Well, SacredPath, I just tried your suggestion. The post in question is here:
http://lornakismet.wordpress.com/2009/08/26/obama-targets-medicare-advantage-seniors-would-lose-with-health-reform-and-seniors-vote/The little section about Karl Rove is what I wanted to put in a box. Well, I took a snapshot of it, made a blue border, converted it to hrml, and stuck it into the post. It looked bad. It looked like a makeshift thing. Also, the text lost some of its brilliance and legitility in the procedure, and that also showed up as unprorofessional.
And 1Tess sent something good, but I have no idea…………..

I was thinking you wanted a small aside, not an entire block of text. The suggestion by tess will work. See my test blog here for an example: http://flippintestblog.wordpress.com/2009/08/27/rove/ .
The only other thing I did was to apply an “indent” to all the text (lower tool bar, fifth icon from the right).

@lornakismet
The scroll box is just something the forum does to display the code. It will not appear in your post. It is not part of the code I posted. Just the forum making itself known!
So just ignore it, and click on my code, and select it all and copy. Then paste it into the HTML editor of your post.
As soon as you have done that, switch back to your Visual Editor.
Whew!!! You are safe!
To be extra safe, so the code does not get messed up, start your cursor just past the first “PARAGRAPH_TEXT” and type whatever you want into your box. Then save and preview.
If it looks good, then go back and delete both “PARAGRAPH_TEXT” and you should be good to go!Note, I did not study the indent that tsp added, but my code has space all around the text in the box already. If you want it different, then let us know. Also, you can have a different color for the background. Just ask.
Give it a try! You can do it mostly in the visual editor.

I did the indent just to set it all off a little more. It certainly isn’t necessary, and the different colored background certainly does that anyway.

@tsp
Yes, of course. I often use it myself (with or without the div border).
But remember I’m still close to the time when just looking at source code made my eyes cross and scared me silly. Who knew what monsters under the bed would be disturbed or what a mess my life could become (well, blog, anyway)?You are light years beyond me re: wp.com, coding, CSS, and so much more that I continue learn from you. I remember trying to teach simple algebra to my math-a-phobic husband (brilliant at learning languages and logic with English). Things obvious to me were not even visible to him until he tried them, hands on. No stepping on toes meant.
