  so far so good but I’m at a loss as to how to get text into the ‘ home page widget area ‘

  Hi. Go to Appearance > Widgets and drag and drop what you want under “Homepage Top Right”.

  I know, it would be easier if it was called “Home Page Widget Area”…

  By the way…

  Go into your dashboard -> Users -> Personal Settings -> then scroll down to ‘Account Details’. In the spot where it says ‘website’ fill in the address of your blog and save the changes.

  That will save you the hassle of providing the URL each time you have a question.

  Are you asking which widget is a “text widget”? The name says it:
