text vanishes in draft mode when altering media

  • Unknown's avatar

Every time I try to edit my blog and remove pictures or add captions to them, all the text disappears, just leaving the picture in question, which it won’t allow me to do anything with anyway. It still registers as 1200 words or something but I can’t see them. The only way I can get back to the draft is to preview it and then return to edit through that. But as soon as I try to remove/edit pictures already inserted, the text vanishes again. Anyone have any ideas?

My theme is Selecta. I’m using a Windows 10 laptop. Blog address is https://wordpress.com/posts/bashfulbadgersblog.wordpress.com.

thanks, timethief. i have tried all these options. i don’t think it could be a browser-related issue as it does exactly the same thing whether i’m in edge, mozilla or explorer. but i have enabled cookies (says automatically enabled), cleared the cache and enabled javascript. still no dice.

  • Unknown's avatar

even the same in maxthon. could it be a picture in the content that’s ballsing things up?

  • Unknown's avatar

okay, now though, after going through the steps to enable javascript, none of my email accounts is working, saying that javascript must be enabled. i thought i just did that, through link above, and now it looks like it’s disabled.

  • Unknown's avatar

So I went back through the steps and it looks like javascript is enabled, as are third party cookies. my browser is firefox 54.0, operating system windows 10. using a lenovo laptop intel premium processor, a couple of years old and everything else was working fine up till now. modlook please.

  • Hi there,

Adding an image shouldn’t do that. Can you please tell me the the title of the post you’re working on where this happens?

I’m assuming you’re using the editor at wordpress.com/post, correct? After adding the image and the text disappears, make sure the Save link at the top says Saved, and then press Ctrl-F5 on the keyboard.

    Hi Kokkieh,

Moving or deleting an image is just impossible. I’ve tried copying the entire blog into a new post and I have the same thing. Are you able to get in to edit it? It’s the latest draft I have and called

No Known Cure for Obviously Virus in Media and Tennis World

I am trying to take out the picture of the tennis balls at the top, increase the size of the bbc team and centre it and add a caption to Mark Petchey photo further down.

    Using the usual wordpress editor.

Anything you can suggest, I’d be grateful.

    Cheers,
    Belinda

  • Did you by any chance copy-paste that post’s content in from somewhere else? I see a lot of HTML in there to change the font that was either copied in or added in manually, as the editor doesn’t have a way to change the font.

But I think the issue here is rather with the image captions. The new editor doesn’t handle captions very well yet, and specifically if you try to move an image that already has captions added it can cause all kinds of weirdness.

Can you please try editing the post from the WP-Admin editor instead to remove your images?

    https://bashfulbadgersblog.wordpress.com/wp-admin/post.php?post=3008&action=edit

If you want to move an image with captions, first delete the caption, move the image, and then add the caption back in. Safest option is to leave image captions to the very last, though, after you’ve done everything else you want to do.

    Thanks.

Okay, the current draft is probably cut and pasted from the first one, in case that improved matters. And the text, without the captions, was copied from Word or Open Office initially. You’re right, it does seem to be an issue with moving photos or deleting photos that already have captions. I will try your method.

I do wonder why the editor doesn’t have any options to change text font and size though? And will the caption issue be resolved at any point?

    Cheers,
    Belinda

  • And the text, without the captions, was copied from Word or Open Office initially

Okay, that could also be a cause of this. When you copy from a word processor, code called Rich Text Formatting also get copied in. Rich text is not compatible with HTML that websites use, so the editor tries to convert any rich text into HTML instead, but that doesn’t always work well.

When copying from Word, first copy your content into Notepad, and then copy it into the editor from there. That should strip our any rich text code so it won’t be pasted into the editor.

I do wonder why the editor doesn’t have any options to change text font and size though?

Because websites work different from documents. On a website the structure is controlled by HTML and the appearance is controlled by CSS. A particular font can only be used if it’s been imported into the site’s CSS file, and that’s not possible on WordPress.com. You can set a font for the site via the Customizer, but fonts can’t be changed post by post.

Font size is also set in the CSS. You can change this in a post with inline CSS, though.

Here’s a tutorial a former forum volunteer had written on this:

Formatting text pt. 5: color, size, and font

It’s quite old, but I checked through it and those instructions are still accurate.

And will the caption issue be resolved at any point?

Our developers have been working on this, yes.

Okay, thanks. I now have a different problem, in that I make amendments to the draft that don’t seem to be activated and do not show up in the Preview mode. I’ll leave the font size at the moment, I think, and do that with the notepad that you said. Cheers, Belinda

  • Before you click the Preview button, can you please check if the autosave indicator at the top say Save, Saving or Saved? If it doesn’t say Saved, it means the changes haven’t been autosaved yet, and won’t appear in the preview.

  • Unknown's avatar

Yes, it always says ‘Saved’ before I preview or I save it myself before previewing.

  • Then the most likely explanation is that information is getting cached in your browser.

Please see if clearing the browser cache causes any change in this behaviour.

If not, right-click on the page and select Inspect element. That will open the browser inspector at the bottom of your screen.

Click on the Console tab. At the very bottom there’s a line where you can type text. Type the following:

    localStorage.clear()

    and press Enter.

Please make sure that you save any work that you are doing in any other open browser tabs before doing this, as this will clear out any local data any website has saved in your browser.
