text widget not saving text

  • Unknown's avatar

I got the links-categories problem fixed via feedback. Now i have a problem where the text entered in a text widget disappears immediately on saving the layout.

The same thing happens for html / plaintext pasted in a widget. I remember having this problem earlier, but one day the code which i pasted suddenly appeared on the page.

    To reproduce:
    1. Add a text widget
    2. Type in some text ( in one or both fields )
    3. CLick close
    4. To check if text is still present, open the widget again
    5. Press Save
    6. Open the widget, ** No text present ** !!

    heeeeelp!

Yeah, that’s happening to me too. I just cut and paste everything and try a few times and then it eventually goes through.

this worked for me the first time ( before my link-category problem was fixed )..

i.e. cut n paste a few times, actually my text/code appeared on the blog only the next day!!

Strange. Works for me. Can you try it again please?

I would also try skipping step 4 if it does still cause an issue. Maybe it has something to do with opening it up again and accessing the text. Worked for me though even with opening it a second time.

    hi drmike…

no such luck. No matter what text i type into a widget and save, it dissappears as soon as i click Save Changes… :(

i had faced a similar problem when i started the blog, but my text widgets appeared the next day.

No such luck now!! ( This has happened after i sent feedback to fix the sticky link categories problem )

Sounds like a backend problem. I vote for sending in a feedback so they can look at it. Strange that it works for me though.

    Good luck,

    hi drmike..

most of the problems faced on a blog will not be faced when using another one :)

    { remember the link-category problems that plagued most of us.. When i created a new wp.com blog to test it out , i had absolutely no problem !! :D }

    feedback it is then !

    Hi drmike,

I’ve only just joined today and tried to alter my theme and then add some widgets but although it says my current theme is the one I selected, when I look at my site, it still has the old theme, and no widgets. I’ve done the Save Changes thingy but it doesn’t seem to make any difference.

I haven’t had a problem with the text widget not saving. After entering my text, I never close the window with the X; instead, I just click on the Save Changes button.

    hi viv..
i have tried that, but it seems to be a quirk :) with my account..

i had faced this some time ago as well , but that got sorted out all by itself..!

Ahhh … well it’s the case of the come and go widgets again. I had the same problem a few days ago. I whined and ground my teeth, I cried for help on the forum and received lots of step by step advice. Still they appeared and then disappeared. Then I stumbled on a silly “fix” that worked out for images in widgets in my sidebar. I confirmed that it still works (for me)just a few minutes ago.
    (1) Create a post and upload the image into it and publish it.
    (2) Open the post you have created and select and copy the already published image text.
    (3) Close the post (no need to save it).
    (4) Insert the image text into a text widget and save.
    (5) View your sidebar. It should be there.
    (6) Go to manage, find the page and delete it.
It’s important that you copy the published image text that you intend to transfer. If you don’t publish the image text first and then copy it the image won’t appear in your sidebar.
    Good luck.

:) .. thats a nice idea, but my problem is that even text is not saved in a text widget when you click Save…!

  • Unknown's avatar

Yeah, I’ve been there too. I almost pulled my hair out. I gave up.

When I put something into a sidebar text widget and save it or when I edit existing content in a sidebar text widget and save it, it doesn’t immediately update to the site. I’ve even tried giving it a day or two to get there and forcing a browser refresh directly from the server by hitting CTRL-F5. No luck.

Since the site always shows the next to last update (and not the last) of a sidebar text widget, I finally stumbled across a workaround. After I’ve saved it the way I want it, I go back and reopen it, make a minor change that doesn’t affect the output (like adding an extra space at the end of a paragraph), then close it, and save this invisible change. After that it always shows it on the site the way I meant it to originally, and the minor change (since it’s the last and not the second to last update) never shows up.

I have no idea why this works.

    One minor problem :)

When i open my text widgets the second time… There’s nothing there !!!

  • Unknown's avatar

TA, what browser are you using? Also what version of Flash as well please.

  • Unknown's avatar

    hi drmike..

    im using firefox / ie
    “You have version 8,0,24,0 installed”

I was able to edit text widgets before my sticky link categories problem was fixed..

  • Unknown's avatar

TA, I would suggest creating the text widget and then stop messing with them. :)

Then send in a feedback pointing out to staff that you are unable to edit them. Sounds like a backend issue to me.

  • Unknown's avatar

    yup..
i feedbacked :) a few days ago.. no reply yet.

{ Theres no sense in creating text widgets , since all my widgets remain blank !! :D )

anyway.. waiting for my feedback to get through !

    thanks

If you create a text widget but don’t reopen it, does anything come out though? That’s what I was asking and suggesting. (Remember that the sidebars are cached and it may take a few minutes for them to show up on your blog.)
