Text widget problem with Regulus

  • Unknown's avatar

    I am putting the following HTML in a text widget on Regulus:

    <div align="center"><p><font size="-10">
    <style="font: verdana, arial, sans-serif">
    <strong>Assistants Etrangers WebRing</strong> <br>
    <a href="http://alt-webring.com/cgi-bin/prev.pl?ringid=asstetrangers;siteid=judyb12" target="_top" title="Go to the previous site in this ring">Previous</a> •
    <a href="http://alt-webring.com/cgi-bin/rand.pl?ringid=asstetrangers;siteid=judyb12" target="_top" title="Go to a random site in this ring">Random</a> •
    <a href="http://alt-webring.com/cgi-bin/next.pl?ringid=asstetrangers;siteid=judyb12" target="_top" title="Go to the next site in this ring">Next</a><br>
    <a href="http://alt-webring.com/cgi-bin/home.pl?ringid=asstetrangers;siteid=judyb12" target="_top" title="View the ring home page">Join</a> •
    <a href="http://alt-webring.com/cgi-bin/list.pl?ringid=asstetrangers;siteid=judyb12" target="_top" title="View the list of sites in this ring">List</a><br>
    <em>Powered by <a href="http://alt-webring.com/" target="_top" title="Powered by alt-webring">alt-webring.com</a></em>
    </style></p></font></div>

    Regulus is reformatting it to look like this (scroll all the way down):
    http://judyb12.wordpress.com/

    When i put the same HTML in DayDream, it comes out looking like it’s supposed to (again, scroll down):
    http://assistantsetrangers.wordpress.com/

    What can i do so my Regulus blog doesn’t look like i don’t know what i’m doing (which is only halfway true)? I’m a beginner with HTML, so the code may look a little jerry-rigged, please let me know any suggestions you have.

    Thanks!
    Judy

    For some reason, the code cut off on the right. Let me try this again…

    <div align=\"center\"><font size=\"-10\"><style=\"font: verdana, arial, sans-serif\"><strong>Assistants Etrangers WebRing</strong> <br><a href=\"http://alt-webring.com/cgi-bin/prev.pl?ringid=asstetrangers;
    siteid=judyb12\" target=\"_top\" title=\"Go to the previous site in this ring\">Previous</a> • <a href=\"http://alt-webring.com/cgi-bin/rand.pl?ringid=asstetrangers;
    siteid=judyb12\" target=\"_top\" title=\"Go to a random site in this ring\">Random</a> • <a href=\"http://alt-webring.com/cgi-bin/next.pl?ringid=asstetrangers;
    siteid=judyb12\" target=\"_top\" title=\"Go to the next site in this ring\">Next</a><br><a href=\"http://alt-webring.com/cgi-bin/home.pl?ringid=asstetrangers;
    siteid=judyb12\" target=\"_top\" title=\"View the ring home page\">Join</a> • <a href=\"http://alt-webring.com/cgi-bin/list.pl?ringid=asstetrangers;
    siteid=judyb12\" target=\"_top\" title=\"View the list of sites in this ring\">List</a><br><em>Powered by <a href=\"http://alt-webring.com/\" target=\"_top\" title=\"Powered by alt-webring\">alt-webring.com</a></em></style>
    </font></div>

    I’m very un-techie myself, but could it be that the \’s are supposed to be //’s? Actually, when I put in code, it doesn’t have any of those \’s at all, not even spaces where you’ve put them in.

  • Unknown's avatar

    actually, they’re not really there at all. If you look at the first post with the cut off code, there is only 1 between ‘div align=”center”‘ and they aren’t in the code itself in the widget. Something to do with the backticks and the forum requirements, maybe?

  • Unknown's avatar

    D’oh. Okay.

    I’m wondering if it has something to do with the designation “top” in all of them…because only one can be top. Is that designation in all of the ones at the second site? Because the spatial relationships are different there; but that one is wider, so you wouldn’t be able to have that layout in a sidebar widget anyway. Try stripping out “target=top” entirely and see what happens. Warning; my method of learning is to keep hitting things until they’re fixed. If you’re cautious, you may want to wait till Dr. Mike wakes up in two or three hours.

    Which do you want first, the good new or the bad news?

    The good news: It’s nothing you’ve done.

    The bad news: It’s Regulus. The way it handles the text widget is overriding the style information in the HTML.

    So, what can you do about it? Unfortunately, changing theme is about he only way to go I think.

    Sorry!

    Collin

    Hah! Thanks, Rain. My method is the same, and i have been completely unsuccessful with this. The target=top just breaks you out of frames to get to the next site in the ring (should someone actually still be using frames). And yes, all that’s in there on the DayDream widget.

    It’s definitely something with Regulus, and i’m afraid i might have to go with the CSS upgrade and have someone hold my hand dealing with that. Not sure it’s worth it, but i have set up this ring myself, and it would be weird not to have my site as part of it.

    Collin,

    we were typing at the same time. That’s what i thought. Dammit. I really like Regulus, too.

    The ” bit is PHP encoding for security for placing data into a database. Whereever you’re getting that from is producing broken code.

    Please try the code in the next post.

  • Unknown's avatar

    The forum is eating the code. Load the code into a text editor and do a search and replace for the ” bits and replace them with just the quote mark.

    I would also suggest changeing those <br>‘s into <br /> to stay XML correct.

    If you need help, please add me in as an admin and I can do it for you. Theapparatus ( at ) gmail ( dot ) com

    Hope this helps,

    i’ll give it a try and give you a holler if i need help. Thanks!

    No dice. Like i said, those back slashes just aren’t in the real code. Here’s a screen shot of the code, since the forum doesn’t like the actual stuff:
    http://judyb12.files.wordpress.com/2007/02/code.jpg

    DrMike, i have added you as an Admin, and i changed those break tags (i can never remember which way the slash goes or where the space should be). I’ll buy you a steak dinner if you can fix this without the CSS upgrade ;-)

  • Unknown's avatar

    Hmm, all of the links work for me in that text widget. It’s breaking it down into seperate lines which is annoying though.

  • Unknown's avatar

    I can’t get it to display on two seperate lines. Anyone have a suggestion? I tried using display:inline but that just pushed everything to the left. The theme does a display:block and that overrides what I want to do to it.

    The links work though.

  • Unknown's avatar

    @DrMike – thank you so much for trying. Too bad about that steak dinner, though ;-)

    If i was to purchase the CSS upgrade, would i be able to fix it, do you think?

    This may be a stupid thing to ask, but i’ll ask it anyway. I know the $15 is for a year; if i don’t renew after the 1st year does my theme revert to the original or just fossilize as is at the time of expiry?

    Thanks, again, DrMike, you really do go above and beyond on these forums.

  • Unknown's avatar

    We believe it reverts back to the original. The CSS upgrade wouldn’t apply unless you bought it to remove the “display:block” that’s in place for the sidebar. You should be able to override it in the text widget. My CSS skill isn’t the best. Maybe Trent’s got an answer.

    Hope this helps,

    Yes, this is one of the problems with Regulus. I had the same problem with a web-ring I belong to. At one point, I added the code into a separate page but it was just a hassle. As wonderful as Regulus is (and it is wonderful), this is one of those things I just find annoying.

  • Unknown's avatar

    I would think that the display tag would have some way to display within a line (ie like ‘inline’) but it doesn’t.

    Judy, could you please do me a favor and drop me from your blog now? I’m signed up with way too many of them. :)

    Thanks. Had about 40 blogs listed back in November. I could never see my own stuff on my dashboard page anymore.

    If any of our resident CSS experts care to chip in, I don’t have a clue on this one. :)
