Text Wrapping Images

How do I get images to be text wrapped?

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

  • Hi there – Do you mean you want your text to wrap around your images? Try left- or right-aligning your images:
    Image Alignment

  • Unknown's avatar

    He Eurello,
We have done that. But they are still such buggers to line up. The top of the picture doesn’t always align with the text that you have next to it.

Example: On our News & Blog page, http://jerusalemmill.wordpress.com/blog/ can you see how the text and image do not align?

Also on our Living History page, http://jerusalemmill.wordpress.com/living-history/ do you see how the three pictures at the bottom will not align three in a row? The third picture continues to begin a new “line”

    Hi there!

I took a look and adjusted your News & Blog page: it turns out your image was placed a few words into the paragraph, instead of *before* the paragraph, and that was messing up the alignment. If you find this happening again, make sure your cursor is before or after your text when you insert it.

The general image treatment was influenced by the standard style for this theme, but I got your images to align a little closer to the top of the text in general by adding this line of css to your Custom CSS area:

    .alignleft, .alignright { margin-top: 0.5em; }

The three images at the bottom of your Living History page won’t stay together bcause they’re too wide to all fit in the field. That makes one of them skip to the next line. You can change this by making your images a bit smaller:

Select an image in your ‘Visual Editor’ and click the little ‘Edit Image’ button (it looks like a mountain in a picture frame) that pops up. Here, you can reduce the size by choosing a percentage, or by clicking ‘Advanced Settings’ and giving the image a specific width in pixels.

Keep in mind that this will only keep the images side-by-side at regular screen size. Once it’s viewed on smaller screens, your theme design adapts for readability by narrowing the main content.

Let me know if that covers everything you need, or if you have any more questions!

    Hi Denise,
Are you able to direct us on how to move the site from a type of holding folder over to the actual web address?
    Thank you again!

  • Unknown's avatar

Sure, I’d love to guide you. It sounds like you want to give your site a custom domain name? If that’s the case, you don’t have to move the site itself at all. You just need to add or purchase your domain name, and then set it as the primary domain for your current site.

If you know which name you want to register, you can visit Store > Domains in your WordPress site dashboard, and enter it under ‘Register or Map a Domain Name,’ then click ‘Add domain to blog’ to purchase it for your site.

    Here’s a direct link:
    https://jerusalemmill.wordpress.com/wp-admin/paid-upgrades.php?page=domains

Here’s info about registering a new domain:
    http://en.support.wordpress.com/domains/register-domain/

If you already own the domain name you want to use, having registered it through another company, that’s fine too. You can use it on your WordPress.com site by purchasing a domain mapping upgrade. Here’s more information on that process, if you need it:
    http://en.support.wordpress.com/domains/map-existing-domain/

You can have multiple domains if you want, and choose which one is always used, no matter how the visitor gets to your site:
    http://en.support.wordpress.com/domains/domains-settings/#changing-your-primary-domain

If I’ve missed the mark, and you do want to move your site somewhere else, let me know with a few details and we can talk that process through. :)

Let me know if you have questions!

This is exactly the advice that we needed Denise, thank you. We will keep you posted on how it goes.

  • Unknown's avatar

Excellent. Bug me anytime if you have further questions!

    Hi Denise,
A question for you: our site is being hosted by a different provider currently while we were constructing our Word Press site. I believe we have purchased hosting from Word Press, but how can I tell? I know our receipt says we have the “Value Bundle” but that does not tell me what all the features are that we have a right to.
    Thank you!

  • Unknown's avatar

Sure! Basic WordPress.com hosting is included for free always. Your Premium bundle purchase gives you extra storage space, as well as domain registration or mapping, the ability to customize your css, and more. Here’s a breakdown of the services included:

    Hi Denise,

A long story short, we exported the site to our original domain name and host. The pictures that you fixed, plus mine, are now no longer aligned. When I go into the CSS Editor under the appearance tab, I am not able to get the editor to accept my changes. Do you have any idea why?

In fact, none of the previous CSS changes that I made to both images and text are no longer effective.

Then there are the widgets. The export did not transfer any of the widgets and when I attempt to apply a new plugin, I cannot get them to look like our original test site.

Thank you again for your help!

  • Unknown's avatar

Hi there, that all makes sense. It’s a different system, so custom changes are not applied the same way.

The templates here might use different css than the theme you would use on the self-hosted version of WordPress, so any code you need to add, and the method you use to add it, need to be different.

The widgets you were using here are specific to WordPress.com, although there are many duplicates in the self-hosted WordPress world. The Jetpack plugin is a good place to start, as that will give you a lot of the regular WordPress.com widgets you were used to:

Jetpack – WP Security, Backup, Speed, & Growth

Some of the standard widgets come bundled with the software, and some are available as stand-alone plugins. You can browse plugins here by putting in keywords to search for the functionality you want:

    http://wordpress.org/plugins/

Here, we don’t have any access to your new site to check out what’s going on, so we can’t offer support on specific problems like styling and css editing. But I can direct you to the WordPress.org support forums, where lots of self-hosted users can help you:

    http://wordpress.org/support/

Hope that helps to some degree! Let me know if you have questions about this, I’d be happy to go into it further.

    Hi Denise,

I moved our site from the old host over to WordPress.com. We received notice that the domain name was transferred. When a visitor now goes to our site they are directed to the WordPress.com log in screen and told that they have to log in, in order to view the site. Can you please help me figure out what is wrong?

    Thank you!!!

  • Unknown's avatar

Hi again! Glad to see things are coming together, sorry to hear your visitor had troubles.

The good news is that I was able to access your site at jerusalemmill.org while logged out, without getting redirected to a WordPress.com login screen. I tried Firefox and Chrome, as well as Safari on iPad and iPhone. So that’s a great sign, and it’s possible that the DNS changes just took a little time to propagate in the meantime.

However, if the problem is still happening, could you please give me some more details? Did you experience the problem yourself? How many users reported this redirect problem to you? It’s possible they’re seeing an old, cached version, so there are a few steps we need to take to figure this out. Could you please ask everyone involved to clear their browser cache or try viewing it in a different browser? Here are some pointers:

    Solve Common Browser Issues

Once that’s done, if they’re still getting bumped to a login page when they visit jerusalemmill.org, could you find out what browser they’re using? What is the address of the page they’re bumped to? Are there any error messages, and if so, what are they? If something out of the ordinary happens, a screenshot is always helpful, too. :)

    Take a Screenshot

Let me know! We’ll get to the bottom of this.

    Thanks,
    Denise

    Hi Denise,
Thank you very much for your reply. It was my daughter’s phone and my computer and also another user’s phone. The sites in my house are working fine now. I will let you know if the other phone is not.
    Thank you again!

    Hi Denise,
Are you able to please guide me as how to put an RSS feed on the blog page only? Right now I have it in the sidebar, but of course, it shows up then on all of the pages.
    Thank you!

  • Unknown's avatar

Absolutely! You can control where a widget appears by clicking its ‘Visibility’ button, which will give you a few more options. Here’s the full info:

    Widgets

In your case, it would be best to set a category for your blog posts, so that you can choose to display that widget only on that category.

I also notice that you’ve got a page set as ‘News & Blog.’ If you’d like to include a blog with regular updates, you should use Posts instead of Pages. Pages are meant to be static pieces of content that stay in place forever, whereas posts are meant to be current items that move down in the list as new content is added. A list of posts is called an ‘archive.’ Here’s some more information about the difference!

    Pages vs. Posts

Once you have a blog set up with individual posts, you can set your widget visibility to match your setup by category or archive pages.

I also wanted to mention that there are two widgets available that have to do with RSS feeds. One displays the RSS feed link for your site so that readers can add and follow them:

    RSS Links Widget

The other RSS widget publishes a stream from any RSS feed you like:

Take a look, try this all out, and let me know if you have further questions! I’d be happy to look over what you put in place and give suggestions.

Greetings! How are you this evening? We had a really great day today getting things squared up with our WordPress site as it is progressing right along. Thanks to you!!

Another question has been raised. I do not own an iPhone, however, user who do are stating that the text on them from our site is huge. Is there a way to correct this?

    As always, thank you!!
