No dynamic Category page or for that matter a Categories widget will have any data to display until after a post is published in the Category.

@mightymei
These are not Category pages at all. They are static pages that cannot automatically update:

How Can I Help?
See Mei In Action!
Updates From Mei’s Mom
Contact(1) There is only one page we can post to in any blog and
(2) The static pages http://en.support.wordpress.com/pages/ we bloggers create do not automatically update.Only the dynamic pages like Archives, Categories and Tags created by the software when we publish a post will update automatically update with new posts.
By default the front page of the blog is the Page that displays all posts in your blog. You can create a static front page but doing that does not change what follows.
Though there is only one dynamic page in a blog for posts (not pages) http://en.support.wordpress.com/post-vs-page/ and we cannot post to more than that one page, we can create the appearance that we have posted to more than one page.
We organize posts by assigning categories to them. You can create a custom menu and add the dynamic categories pages into the custom menu.

http://en.support.wordpress.com/menus/#changing-the-order-creating-sub-menusWe can also add other items into a custom menu like static Pages http://en.support.wordpress.com/menus/#adding-pages but as I said above no static Pages will ever automatically update.

There are many common errors, misunderstandings and misconceptions when creating custom menus and there are some tweaks you can use to improve your custom menu as well.

I think you misunderstand.
I know perfectly well the difference between posts vs. pages and what updates automatically and what does not. This is not my first time setting up a WordPress blog.
The problem I am having is that “Updates From Mei’s Mom” is formatted to link to a category – updates. When I try to view all the posts in that category, WordPress is giving me a 404 error and telling me nothing can be found, even though I have several posts in that category as examples.
The funny thing is, it was working fine up until today. I signed in to make some edits to my front page, and suddenly my menu went boom. If I look in the category area of my dashboard, the post is listed under the correct category, but WordPress can’t seem to find it from the menu on my site. I’ve tried recreating the menu from scratch – no luck.

I think I should explain more about the problem I am facing now.
Previously, the wordpress is accessing all the categories via this format – http://username.wordpress.com/category/name1 and it works fine until this morning. I cannot access my posts via category anymore. E.g. views all posts by category “Photography”. Now whenever I access my wordpress http://bryanchua.wordpress.com/category/photography/ , it shows “Oops! That page can’t be found.” I hope someone can help me / us with this.

I found the source of the problem.
You cannot name the Categories “2013”. I have a few “years” in categories and make the links go haywire. I renamed them all and now it works.
Hope it helps.
