The “Video” post format seems to be missing from the 2012 Theme. I have several draft posts where that option was used, but in trying to create a new post that option isn’t available. Has it somehow been removed?

Whether or not post formats are available in any theme and which ones they are varies from theme to theme.

I’ve read that and understand that not all posts are available in all themes. I’m not sure I was clear, but several posts I’d already created (all drafts) last year all used the Video format within 2012. Format options listed were Standard, Aside, Image, Link, Quote, Status, and Video. New post options include the first six format options but not video. I haven’t changed themes, but wondered if I’d missed a step to make that option appear, or if that format option had been removed from the theme in the past few months when I wasn’t creating posts. Thanks!

Exactly where do you think you see that listed?

Hmmm…I see that in both those links that not all six (or seven) are listed! Strange! On the post I started within the past half hour, the first six were there. The format options are in a box beneath the Publish box on the edit page for any given post.
Is there a way I can attach screenshots here? I can show you exactly what I’m seeing. I’m sure I can find a workaround; just wondered if I was doing something wrong. No big deal when all is said and done; I appreciate your help. Thanks! -

Great question, but no —I doubled checked that since I noticed that Twenty Thirteen offered different post formats and thought maybe I was confused (!), but all my posts have been in Twenty Twelve and I’ve never changed. I am indeed subscribed to this topic, too; thanks again.

I looked into this and I can confirm your current theme (Twentytwelve) doesn’t include video post formats.
The theme you were using around the time you created those drafts was Zoren, and it does have video post formats, so my guess is you created those posts while you were using that theme.
Hopefully that solves the mystery!

Hi there! I know that Twenty Twelve doesn’t currently include video post formats, but I know I never used Zoren. I’d toyed with 2011 and a couple others, but Zoren was definitely not one of them. If you click on the links on my post from yesterday 2/5 @ 5:19 you can see what the post formats included in my drafts from 2013 (most started before August 1, 2013 when Zoren was released), and they were definitely done with Twenty Twelve. So the mystery has still not been solved, but I appreciate your looking into it. Thanks!

I have a question that relates to the above: If I decided to change from 2012 to Zoren (or another theme), will my current drafts maintain their appearance, or will I need to tweak them? And more importantly, if I don’t care for the changes, can a change back to 2012 and restore my previous drafts as they were? Thanks again for your insights and help!

The posts won’t look exactly the same, as each theme is formatted a bit differently, but generally the changes you see work better in the chosen theme.
And more importantly, if I don’t care for the changes, can a change back to 2012 and restore my previous drafts as they were?
If you don’t make any changes while you are in the new theme, when you switch back the posts will look the same.
As for the original mystery, we do make changes/updates to themes when necessary, but I haven’t found evidence one way or the other on whether the 2012 included the video post format in the past. In any case if you want to use the format going forward, you’ll need to pick a new theme.

I’ve actually found a sort of workaround that makes the video format unnecessary in Twenty Twelve. If I use “Add Media” and put the video link into the URL option there, the post looks the same as those that used the video format option before.
I may check out some other themes without making changes, just to see if they’ll work better or suit my needs as well. My page hasn’t gone live yet (I’m a slow starter ;-) ) but all this may push me to getting myself moving and starting for real.
