The apparent impossibility of placing sidebars for the first time…

I am trying to place a sidebar on my blog, and getting nowhere fast. I understand that widgets have to be placed in sidebars, but how do you place the sidebar?

Dashboard/Appearance/Widgets takes me to a page featuring a list of widgets and displays three sidebars to be filled with widgets; so far, so good. But once the sidebar is filled, there is no apparent way of adding it to the blog.

Appearance/Customise/Widgets also allows me to add/remove/modify widgets in specific sidebars – but once again, there is is no obvious or clear way of applying the sidebar.

To add the the problem, looking for information on ‘sidebar’ in Support defaults to ‘widget’, as though sidebars were self-evident, or not a valid subject.

Any clarification would be very gratefully received.

  • There is no sidebar designed for your theme: the Tonal theme.

You will have to let go of Tonal and pick from one of these themes if you would like to have a sidebar.

    Many thanks.

Is it utopian to wonder why that crucial bit of information isn’t prominently posted on the theme’s basic information page?

Oh well. I’m very grateful for the response, anyway

… and thanks also for the list of themes – a great help.
